I coordinated every aspect of Quill and Scroll, but the core activity was promoting and communicating — through a weekly blog, social media, podcasts and videos — the nonprofit organization’s ethical standards to more than 11,500 chapters around the world. I taught sections of two classes as an adjunct in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and I served on the board of Student Publications Incorporated (chair for 2021-22 academic year), the governing board for the Daily Iowan, DITV and dailyiowan.com.

I directed this long-form, investigative local news project at the University of Colorado in Boulder, supervising up to 20 students — both graduate and undergraduate — per semester to produce content for Colorado media outlets. The projects ranged from election-year fact-checks for the Denver Post and documentary films for Rocky Mountain PBS to multimedia online stories; More often than not, the stories focused on issues of diversity, including immigration, income disparity and officer-involved shootings. My position at CU also included teaching two courses per semester as a full-time instructor. At the end of my four years, donors gifted $2.5 million to the CU College of Media, Communication and Information to fully endow CU News Corps.

I directed KSPA’s activities, conferences and contests while serving as a lecturer in the KU School of Journalism, teaching two multimedia reporting courses per semester. The courses included Advanced Reporting, which included students who served as the senior reporters at the University Daily Kansan. In addition, I served as the director of the Kansas Journalism Institute, the summer journalism camp at KU for students and advisers. We annually hosted about 125 students and 5-10 advisers at KJI.

I served as the newsroom adviser to the 2004 Pacemaker Award-winning Rocky Mountain Collegian from 1999-2004 and as director of all Student Media — the daily newspaper, the radio station, the television station and College Avenue magazine — from 2004-2008, overseeing a $1.3 million budget and supervising seven full-time professionals and hundreds of student journalists. I wrote the strategic plan adopted by the university in 2008 to create a nonprofit organization housing all student media. I served as a consultant to the new independent Rocky Mountain Student Media Corporation from 2008-2009.

I taught journalism, English and history classes at Colorado’s second-largest high school. In 1996, my students earned the Sweepstakes Award — the equivalent of a state championship — in the Colorado High School Press Association’s annual competition.

During my last year as a graduate student at UF, I worked full-time for the Sun. I covered UF sports and worked nights on the sports copy desk during my teaching internship.

I covered a variety of beats at the Sun-Sentinel, starting as a community sports reporter and eventually covering the 1987 NFL strike and two Final Fours.
