About Jeffrey Peer

Jeffrey Peer is a Visiting Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he teaches Latin American literature and culture. He received a PhD in Comparative Literature from The Graduate Center, CUNY, writing his dissertation on Mexican crónica, contemporary nonfiction, and literary journalism. Prior to coming to UMass, he taught at CUNY and with the Bard Prison Initiative. He was a Fulbright Fellow in Mexico in 2015, where he studied urban chronicles of Mexico City.His current academic research investigates literary journalism and creative nonfiction, with a focus on digital journalism, new media, and contemporary crónica from Latin America. He also writes about comparative literature, the history of the novel, and contemporary fiction. He has published criticism with Public Books, the Los Angeles Review of Books, World Literature Today, among other journals. He translates from Spanish and edits new books for Chatos Inhumanos, a bilingual press based in New York.
