Jeffrey represented a Minnesota company that had a distribution agreement with a foreign manufacturer. Jeffrey convinced the arbitrators that the manufacturer had used his client’s confidential information to steal a customer. The arbitration panel awarded his client $920,000 in future royalties. Jeffrey represented a small business in trade-secret litigation against a publicly-held company and obtained a substantial settlement for the client. Jeffrey represented an IT firm against two former employees and their new employer regarding the theft of a firm contract. The defendants convinced the district court to dismiss the firm’s case, arguing that the its claims were barred by the applicable Federal Acquisition Regulation and an Executive Order. The Minnesota Court of Appeals reversed the District Court, greatly weakening the defendant’s position. Jeffrey defended a packaging equipment manufacturer against a claim that the equipment was defective. The arbitrators not only rejected the purchaser’s $3 million claim, they also awarded Jeffrey’s client the balance of the equipment's price. Jeffrey helped a Minnesota company that had purchased defective motors from a foreign manufacturer. Jeffrey established that the motors had counterfeit bearings and the panel awarded his client $1.75 million. Jeffrey represented a minority shareholder who was managing the Minnesota division of a tire chain. Jeffrey guided the shareholder’s claims through summary judgment, including a claim for continued employment. As a result, the shareholder received a substantial settlement. Jeffrey represented two contributors to a project to build a beef plant in South Dakota. Bringing both direct and derivative claims, the contributors alleged that the defendants misled investors, misused investor funds, and mismanaged the project. The litigation allowed the two contributors to recoup a very high percentage of their investment in the project.

Nov 2001 - Present

Associate

Moss & Barnett

While I was an associate at Moss, I had a mixed practice that combined litigation and transactional work. I served a chief outside counsel for Minnesota Corn Processors, handling everything from major commercial litigation to negotiating a $100 million joint venture. I also represented the minority unitholder in a limited liability company. Through preparing a detailed complaint and tough negotiations, I was able to get the minority shareholder’s entire investment back.

Jan 2000 - Oct 2001

Associate

Hessian & Mckasy

While I was at Hessian, I represented a software executive and a software engineer in a claim brought against them by their former employer for breach of fiduciary duty and theft of trade secrets. I won summary judgment for the defendants. I also did class action defense work in FCRA and FDCPA cases. Hessian merged with Moss & Barnett.

Mar 1999 - Dec 1999

Associate

Doherty, Rumble & Butler

St. Paul, Minnesota

I worked primarily on handling litigation matters for Minnesota Corn Processors and on condemnation projects for the City of St. Paul, including the acquisition of the Lawson building site.
