MIT – Profile – Dr. Jeff RainesDr. Raines is a Visiting Scientist in the MIT Institute for Medical Engineering and Science of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is an early graduate of an alliance between Harvard Medical School and MIT which was the forerunner to the current Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology Program. Research Interests: In Dr. Raines’ long career his basic focus has been the application of science and engineering to the practice of medicine. His concentration has been improving medical procedures and diagnostics for the cardiovascular system. This includes reducing morbidity and mortality secondary to generalized atherosclerosis.Biography: Dr. Raines completed his undergraduate training (BS) in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Clemson University and has a master’s degree (MME) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida. On completing the MIT/Harvard Medical School Program he joined the Vascular Surgery Division at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) where he became the Founding Director of the first Clinical Vascular Laboratory in the United States. During that time, he created the Pulse Volume Recorder (PVR) which has continued for decades to be one of the most frequently performed functional tests for peripheral vascular disease. He was involved in developing Intraoperative Autotransfusion and other clinical and surgical procedures. His mentors in Boston were Drs. Ascher Shapiro, R. Clement Darling, Robert Linton, and Gerald Austen. On moving to the University of Miami he became the Chief of the Surgical Research Division, Director of the Clinical Vascular Laboratory, and member of the Medical School and Bioengineering Faculty, where he taught nine credits, every term for twenty-four years. During his time in Miami, he was the Principal Investigator for some of the largest National Institute of Health (NIH) Cardiovascular Trials ever conducted, worked with Dr. William Glenn in the development of B-Mode Ultrasound Imaging and obtained the first clinical B-Mode image. He is a Fellow in the Society for Vascular Surgery, Fellow in the American College of Cardiology, and Member of the MGH/Harvard Surgical Society. Dr. Raines is an active medical writer. His current work involves noninvasive early detection and monitoring of generalized atherosclerosis and hemodynamic modeling. On returning to the Boston Area, he rejoined MIT recently and is continuing his diagnostic work. He also wants to make other contributions in his current department and attract new projects.
