I’m curious about everything and enjoy learning new things. For better or worse that has resulted in a highly eclectic career centered around electronics, first with military aviation electronics, then radio and television studio equipment and broadcast transmitters, and after the personal computer revolution began, microprocessors and embedded systems. Fear of becoming one dimensional has driven me to seek to become a learned person. History was actually my most favourite subject in college, and music (playing the oboe) is my favourite hobby. I’ve had a lifelong love of music and audio recording and production. The arrival of digital recording in the late 1970’s and the ability to flawlessly record and reproduce music was a lifelong dream come true.Military service and the adventure that came with that infected me with the travel bug and the desire to learn Japanese. Recently I’ve begun studying Korean. One can learn facts about a country’s history or culture, but to learn how people truly think one must learn their language. As a business owner I’ve been able to meld all of these experiences together in the creative process of product development. Thinking outside of the box is much easier when one is aware of the richness of the landscape outside of that box. Being knowledgeable about many things also greatly facilitates decision making. My professor of Chinese history was fond of quoting an old Chinese saying: “Knowledge without thinking is a waste of time, but thinking without knowledge is dangerous.”Specialties: PCB CAD software, small systems design and development, advanced (high layer count, small feature size) PCB design, and general troubleshooting of industrial electronic systems. More recently have been coaching VA/VE (value analysis/value engineering) sessions to help improve products and reduce unnecessary costs. Fluent in a variety of programming languages such as C and several varieties of microcontroller assembly language.
