The teams support local fire departments with technical information and specialized equipment to handle hazardous materials incidents. The Director of the Hazmat Division reports to the Operations Section Chief and manages six regional response teams directly and through the Steering Committee for each. Develops policies and procedures with the Policy Board and its four subcommittees; facilitates purchase of equipment; implements and administers a statewide cost recovery system; acts as liaison to multiple state and federal agencies regarding hazardous materials incidents, terrorism and other emergencies as directed by the Fire Marshal. Develops emergency response plans for specific threats and conditions; responds to emergencies to provide oversight and coordination. Works with the Hazmat Advisory Board on policies and procedures. Serves to manage the development of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction response programs for the fire service of Massachusetts, including but not limited to research and intelligence on current and emerging threats, recommendations for response plans, training and equipment. Serves as the principal fire service liaison to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and, as directed by the Fire Marshal, to the U.S. Attorney Anti-Terrorism Task Force. Manages the coordination of planning and response with the National Guard, Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team, MA State Public Health Lab, MA State Police EOD and various other local, state and federal agencies .
