Profile bio

About Jeffrey Cote

Experienced Sr. Oracle Database Administrator, with additional hands-on experience in: Linux System Administration; Storage Administration; Docker Swarm and containerization; PL/SQL development; Bash shell scripting. In the past I was tasked with working closely with the Site Reliability Engineers to automate manual processes, streamline and simplify our jobs, remove roadblocks and guarantee that deployments meet our standards. I was assigned to a team tasked with designing my company's CI/CD solution from the database perspective. If you know "CI/CD", then you understand the difficulties of aligning relational database deployments with a CI/CD application development pipeline. With my experiences beyond the database, I consider myself less a "database administrator" and more a "Database Reliability Engineer".

Listed skills include Databases, Oracle, Disaster Recovery, Database Design, and 20 others.

Senior Cloud Database Engineer

Livonia, Mi, Us

I'm working with a group of experienced engineers tasked with moving our SQL Server and Oracle databases from colocation datacenters to all-Oracle databases in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. On top of this I'm individually tasked with developing code to automate some of our painfully long, manual, daily processes. My first automation task, which had been unsuccessfully attempted three separate times over the course of multiple years, I managed to develop and demonstrate in under a month. My hope is to continue cleaning up our environment, leverage my experience to implement additional Oracle features to increase our clients' database performance, and developing innovative code to reduce my team's overall workload.

Oracle Database Administrator

New York, Ny, Us

Having lived the life of an "Oracle Database Administrator" for over 20 years I've evolved into something more; so I won't bore anyone with what I know about Oracle's RDBMS. Here at Newmark I've automated the day-to-day humdrum work so I can focus on more interesting endeavors, such as scripting and automating the deployment of not only my own code, but also the necessary database bundles for our SAAS applications. Using a centralized Linux host, I've created scripts to deploy shell and SQL scripts across multiple hosts and/or databases with a single command, having the granularity to specify Prod/Non-Prod/Dev/Test/ALL. I've deployed Docker containers for a future deployment of an Apache website to monitor and (very lightly) administer our Oracle databases using HTML, CSS, java scripting and GOLANG, so the non-DBA people on my team can quickly and easily access information on any Oracle database, or its host. Having created a centralized repository of my own (not a fan of Oracle's Enterprise Manager Cloud Control application due to its many limitations), I leverage this to monitor numerous aspects of the databases, backups, storage (ASM and ext4 on a Pure storage array, which I also manage), security, etc. And it will act as the access point for the front-end application I'm writing. In other words, I'm keeping it stimulating.

Senior Oracle Database Administrator

Southfield, Mi, Us

I'm working with an exceptionally talented group of people in a very dynamic environment. I'm still doing all the Oracle "stuff" I've been doing for nearly 20 years, so I won't bore you to death by repeating what I do. I am however learning Oracle GoldenGate, which is new to me. Aside from that, I'm also taking on a number of interesting tasks centered around automation. I'm currently working in close conjunction with our Site Reliability Engineers in order to automate many of our long-running and tedious tasks. Using the various skills I've acquired over the years, mainly Oracle and Linux shell scripting, this has become an extremely exciting new facet of my career, one in which I hope to continue working. I've also been recently assigned to our new DevOps Team to work on designing and implementing a CI/CD solution for both our Java code development, as well as database DDL changes.

Oracle Database Administrator

Southfield, Mi, Us

Working at CFI, I've moved nearly all of their hosted client production databases from dedicated, individual Oracle database servers running on Windows platforms to centralized Oracle Linux Clusters. In doing so, I've reduced the footprint in the data center, reduced hardware and licensing costs, reduced maintenance time and overhead, and increased database performance, availability and reliability. I've also centralized the backup strategy by leveraging Oracle RMAN and a back-end SAN, to which all of the production databases are backed up. These backups are then replicated to our secondary data center for additional recoverability in the event of a disaster. In addition to my usual Oracle DBA responsibilities, I've also taken on the role of Linux System Administrator. That entails implementation and configuration, patching, security, backup, and overall system monitoring. In addition to the 70+ Oracle database I currently manage, I'll also absorb the SQL Server database responsibilities to help free up one of my team member's time to focus more on infrastructure, network, security, and internally hosted systems.

Oracle Database Administrator

Ann Arbor, Michigan, Us

This position has afforded me with the opportunity to work with some near-bleeding edge Oracle technologies. By June of 2010, all of our production databases were upgraded to Oracle's latest RDBMS release, 11.2.0.3 Enterprise Edition in a Linux RAC cluster, utilizing list-range Partitioning; and by October 2011, we had set up a new remote disaster recovery site utilizing Oracle Data Guard, having no previous experience with the technology. This is an extremely fast-paced and dynamic environment, which is so refreshing as compared to the alternative ho-hum, same-every-day type job.

Sr. Database Administrator

Ameriprise Advisor Services, Inc.

H&R Block Financial Advisors was purchased by Ameriprise Financial on November 1st, 2008. In this position I maintained the same duties as I did before while working for HRBFA: Design, development, implementation and support of Oracle databases; Implementation and support of Microsoft SQL Server databases; Core member of the Disaster Recovery Team, tasked with recovering all locally managed databases; Member of the Technical Architecture Committee, which investigates and advises the company on new technologies until the project phase begins. The Detroit (HRBFA headquarters) office was finally absorbed by the Minneapolis (Ameriprise headquarters) office in June, 2010 and closed. This was a wonderful place to work, and I'm very confident that, had the Detroit office been allowed to keep its technology data center, I would still be working there today.

Sr. Oracle Database Admin

Us

Handleman Company closed its doors in April, 2008. Unfortunately, even though I enquired about Handleman's financial troubles during my interview phase, I was lead to believe the company had turned a corner through the sale of one of its subsidiary European companies. However, this was not true, and it wasn't until two weeks after starting that the CEO announced new rounds of lay-offs. After the third round of lay-offs in almost as many months, I finally took it upon myself to find another job and leave of my own accord. Regrettably, I learned almost nothing in this position as all Oracle databases were legacy and weren't using any interesting features.
