About Jeffrey Rudolf
I'm a natural products chemist who utilizes bioinformatics, enzymology, genetic engineering, and microbiology to discover chemically and biologically interesting small molecules, understand how they are biosynthesized, and apply them to human health. Being trained by C. Dale Poulter, a preeminent isoprenoid biochemist, and by Ben Shen, a leader in the field of natural products discovery and biosynthesis, I utilize my multidisciplinary training to answer questions at the interface of chemistry and biology. I was awarded the prestigious NIH K99 Pathway to Independence Award in 2017, an Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2016, and a TSRI Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2015. I have published 34 peer-reviewed research articles and reviews (18 first or co-first author) in journals including Nat. Chem. Biol., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Nat. Prod. Rep., Nat. Commun., Org. Lett., ACS Chem. Biol., Biochemistry, Chem. Biol., Bioorg. Med. Chem., and J. Ind. Microbiol. Biotechnol. I am a motivated scientist with established experimental, writing, and communication skills. I have led multiple research projects, enjoy working collaboratively, and have mentored high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, and other postdocs.I joined the Chemistry Department at the University of Florida in the Fall of 2018 as an Assistant Professor in the Chemical Biology division
Listed skills include Cloning, Heterologous Protein Expression, Protein Purification, Pcr, and 22 others.

- We look to Nature for inspirations in natural products discovery, chemistry, enzymology, and biology. My primary project is the characterization of the biosynthesis of two bacterial diterpenoid antibiotics.
- Created a genetically amenable dual PTM-PTN overproducer for future use as a model strain for biosynthesis and bioengineering studies
- Discovered new antibacterial sulfur-containing PTM and PTN analogues
- Characterized enzymes that catalyze key biosynthetic steps in PTM and PTN biosynthesis
- Bioengineered a designer library of PTM and PTN analogues
- Structurally and biochemically characterized the first bacterial type II diterpene synthase
Graduate Research Assistant
- PhD thesis: Dimethylallyltyrosine synthase and dimethylallyltryptophan synthase: Promiscuous aromatic prenyltransferases. Members of this enzyme family balance regiospecificity and promiscuity and the mechanism of the.
- Revealed that both enzymes catalyze both normal and reverse prenylations at five different positions of the indole ring of tryptophan
- Established the first S-prenylation of an aromatic compound using SirD and thiotyrosine
Teaching Assistant
I was a teaching assistant for a spring semester undergraduate course in biochemistry taught by Drs. C. Dale Poulter and Kenneth Woycechowsky. The course consisted of ~120 students. I led daily discussion sections, held office hours for private and small group tutoring, and graded exams.
Laboratory Teaching Assistant
I was a laboratory teaching assistant for an undergraduate course in organic chemistry taught by Dr. Kyle Craig. The course consisted of ~40 students. I assisted with instruction and supervision of lab sessions, prepared materials and operated equipment, and graded lab books and quizzes.
Undergraduate Science Tutor
I was a tutor for all sciences for the University’s walk-in tutoring facility. Most often, visiting students were in courses including general chemistry, biology, and physics; other courses included organic chemistry, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and biostatistics.
Summer Undergraduate Research Assistant
As a summer undergraduate research fellow, we used stable isotopically-labeled nucleosides and GC-MS to measure the nucleotide metabolic flux of chronic myelogenous leukemia cells.
