Profile bio

About Jeffrey Barber

I commune with the machine, and I find computing fun. For most of my life, I've built for the sake of building with the spirit of "ars gratia artis". I'm a builder of software. I'm a hacker of machines that will throw stuff together with duct-tape and make something "just work". When something that "just works" isn't good enough, then I put on the hat of the mathematician and apply full rigor. Balancing these two forces defines me as a software engineer. However, I'm more than a code slinging professional. I build software for other people, and I'm at the level of "practitioner". In my quest to stretch myself further, I've picked up writing since I value my ability to communicate in non-orthodox ways. I enjoy finding the right sequence of words that open up complex ideas in people's minds. When I was an educator, I enjoyed watching minds get on fire by new ideas, and I took joy and pride in taking the effort to transcribe and refine the language of mathematics to improve its understanding rather than its precision or pedantry.Specialties: Math, Programming Language Design, Programming (any language), Real Analysis, Compiler & Interpreter Design, Artificial Intelligence, Bayesian Networks, Computer Graphics, Capacity Planning, Database Design, Distributed Database Databases, Programming Languages, Security Analysis, Code Generation Toolkits, Linux Programming, Windows Programming, Rewrite Systems, and Proofs.

Listed skills include Linux, Distributed Systems, Programming, Php, and 45 others.

Jeffrey Barber work experience

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Principal Software Engineer (Ic8)

Menlo Park, Ca, Us

Engineering leader and dark lord of Real-time Infrastructure (RTI). RTI powers the real-time experiences behind Newsfeed, Live Videos, Messenger, Instagram, and other products.Under my leadership, the system went from a collection of hodge-podge systems into a unified "containerize JavaScript streaming compute platform".We own the entire stack of this massive distributed system with pub/sub primitives that connect javascript containers together. We own the highly specialized container orchestration, manage deployments, stream centric traffic routing and shaping, a new and fancy streaming protocol, operational control plane to have precise control over the virtual machines, and more. It's a beautiful thing. The problems we face are how to cheaply provide real-time for the long-tail of small-scale experiences that can instantly (and sometimes without warning), scale to world-wide events like solar eclipses and presidential debate. The scope of our scale is practically everyone.

Jan 2015 - Dec 2021

Sr. Software Development Engineer

Seattle, Wa, Us

As a leader, I designed a JavaScript tool chain to operate S3's internals. This tool chain allowed flexible operations. Furthermore, I designed and built a new test platform for writing reliable acceptance tests that ran continuously and en mass to drive quality of the service.I also worked in the space of gossip networks building on the work from the paper https://www.cs.cornell.edu/home/rvr/papers/GossipFD.pdf to detect failures. I extended ideas from the paper to handle in-rack propagation to reduce gossip times by half.

Apr 2014 - Dec 2014

Software Development Engineer

Seattle, Wa, Us

I worked on Amazon's S3 Web Service and worked as an individual contributor on efforts to ship server side encryption (i.e. protect customer's data from hard disks leaving data centers), object expiration via lifecycle management (i.e. delete data on behalf of customers), glacier archival (i.e. transition data from warm storage to cold storage for archiving). As a leader, I designed and shipped cors support (i.e. how to use S3 via a web browser), website redirects (i.e. how to build an SEO friendly website), and website routing rules and root domain support (i.e. how to actually use S3 as a redirect service to support SEO).

Mar 2011 - Mar 2014

Chief Hacker Emeritus (Cofounder)

Westwood, Ks, Us

I'm duct-tape.I devised the initial and long term technical vision and executed it.I put the company years ahead of its competitors.

Jan 2008 - Feb 2011

Software Architect / Webos Inventor (Cofounder)

Brkz Corp

Web development and consultancy firm specializing in social media and networking. Developed Hurox - an online social marketplace that lets users share, sell, and buy content.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-Re1QJMXLE I designed and built a customized WebOS with a custom IDE to manage and enable developers to build applications within the WebOS.

Nov 2006 - Mar 2008

Graduate Research Assistant

Manhattan, Ks, Us

Practiced the arcane under Dr. Hsu.

Jan 2005 - Jun 2007

Graduate Teaching Assistant

Manhattan, Ks, Us

I managed recitations and tutored students.

Aug 2005 - May 2007

Founder

Mathgladiator Tutoring

I wrote a tutoring software package around my computer algebra system ( https://github.com/mathgladiator/tutor ), and then I offered students the ability to use it to help them with their homework. It was designed to be given exam-level questions and spit out detailed professor-generated answers with all work shown. It was applicable to College Algebra, Calculus I, and Calculus II students.

2004 - 2006 ~2 yrs

Founder

Stocks!

I wrote a crawler and predictive intelligence to take daily stances on a stock portfolio (buy, sell, short). I think I might as well have thrown darts. I want to return to this using multiple agents and data mining since people are fundamentally predictable.

2001 - 2002 ~1 yr

Hacker (Cofounder)

File Sharing Accelerator

I wrote a P2P engine that was multi-threaded and multi-client; it could download from multiple clients concurrently and max out the local computers bandwidth. It did a weighted round robin between multiple clients to download multiple chunks of a file from multiple peers as fairly as possible. It enabled peers to throttle upload and download speed.
