I am a professor at Syracuse University, specializing in data science and currently on a rotation to the National Science Foundation. My Ph.D. is from the University of Connecticut (1997) in Industrial/Organizational Psychology where I did my master's thesis and doctoral dissertation on the use of technology in work organizations. I've written several books, including "Reasoning with Data," that introduces Bayesian methods alongside more traditional frequentist inference techniques, and "Introduction to Data Science" (with my colleague Jeff Saltz as lead author), a textbook for introductory data science courses. I also published a book called "Information Nation," about diversity, education, and careers in the information professions and a book entitled, "The Visible Employee," about the behavioral aspects of information security. I have more than 70 publications in total, some in behavioral science journals, such as the Journal of Applied Psychology and some in technology journals such as the Communications of the ACM. Prior to academia, I worked in human resources consulting and in management and engineering positions. In addition to two graduate degrees in Psychology, I have an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. I received the GSLC certification from SANS and am a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and of the Association for Psychological Science. I am a Certified University Planner, having completed steps 1, 2, and 3 with the Society for College and University Planning. I completed a one year fellowship with the American Council on Education in 2013 including a placement in the president's office of a SUNY campus.
