When I was a kid, I dreamed to be an athlete, author or teacher.Those dreams still inspire me today as I train myself in body and mind to always be learning and share what I learn.At first, when in university, I felt I'd been foolish pursuing life the way that I did. The world was designed for specialists, and my friends who were becoming doctors, lawyers, engineers and business leaders had far more clarity and earning potential than I did as a curious "generalist."So I tried to course correct, pursuing a career as a tech recruiter. I followed my curiosity and learned a lot. I earned more money than the average public school teacher. But my goals weren't to earn more and more. I wasn't motivated by the prestige of promotions. I didn't want to specialize either.What I wanted was to be continuously growing, and then communicating those learnings for others to benefit. Whether through writing or teaching or coaching, I feel most fulfilled when sparking curiosity in others, inviting them to see life in another way. And I got to thinking...What if the mainstream media, our employers and governments were helping us understand how to balance between true health and enough money? What if we knew when we had enough power and could then shift focus to create safety for others? What if we could stop driving forward and pay more attention to how we strengthen our foundation? Not always going up and up and up, but instead taking time to broaden our interests and grounding ourselves in community?If not the mainstream media, our employers or governments -- then maybe it can be us helping each other to know what we need. We can show up for ourselves. And rather than wait until retirement (or the next burnout), we can take charge of our life today.No need to have it all figured out. We can start by expressing what we wish.Like a child saying what he or she wants to do when they get older, we can say what it is we wish were true. That wish may become a dream, and that dream when supported by others might become reality.
