I apparently suffered a heart attack Friday, 1-Mar-2019 while competing in an Ironman 70.3 race in Muscat, Oman. At the time of the race, I knew something was wrong and suspected it may be a heart attack, so I stopped my race. I never went into cardiac arrest. With a lower heart rate my symptoms subsided over the next couple of hours. I didn’t receive a proper EKG until Friday, 8-Mar-2019 after returning to my doctor in the US. I was sent for a Echo-cardiogram later that day and then had two stents put in later that night. My diagnosis was a full blockage of the LAD / widowmaker artery.I have suspected that my training leading up to this race was likely what helped me develop collateral arteries. I should have gone into cardiac arrest nearly immediately. Not only did I not go into cardiac arrest, but my heart was functioning sufficiently to allow me to carry on for over eight days until I received proper medical care. During those eight days, I had various symptoms I attributed as the flu including a ‘fever’ (or so I thought) and cold sweats. I now know it is entirely possible I was experiencing cardiac stress during those eight days. A gift from God such as this causes one to seek the physiological answers how this could have happened. It wasn’t until I read this article (https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.115.016442) that I fully understood the physiological reason for my miracle - the development of significant collateral arteries.In spite of my setback, I never gave up on rehabbing and getting stronger. 2021 was a big year for my rehab, culminating in finishing a full 140.6 Ironman race 21-Nov-2021. I have since completed an Ironman 140.6 race in 2023 and 2024.The discovery of why God chose to leave me here is just unfolding. The challenge of determining how to avoid a subsequent heart attack will be my life’s greatest challenge. My challenge for you is to live each day as is if it a gift – because it is.
