I have years of experience, and in my first career I was the expert, the one that others turned to for advice, knowledge, and answers. My opinions were well respected by my management, and my input was valued. I realize that, in a new career, I need to start at the bottom again. No longer an expert, but one who needs to learn and grow in my chosen new career. That thought doesn't scare me the way I thought it would; it actually excites me. I have had a passion for maps since a young age. I love looking at a map and knowing that it represents a real place. I see questions that only maps can answer, and I have found I truly enjoy looking for answers in maps. In my previous position I learned all about people, almost every type of person there is. I learned how to teach them, how to guide them and how to help them find themselves. Now I want to return to my first intellectual love, reading, making and answering questions with maps. I completed a GIS certificate at College of DuPage and have a Bachelor’s Degree relating to my previous field. I have continued taking independent studies classes at CoD to develop stronger GIS skills and gain valuable knowledge in geographic analysis. As part of my schooling, I completed projects for Forest Hills Cemetery, FEMA, Northwestern Medicine, and completed both physical and choropleth maps published in the textbook “The Western World: Daily Readings on Geography.” I understand cartographic concepts and can apply them to make maps both easily understandable and more accurate. Along the way I found out I truly enjoy the challenge of geographic data analysis. In looking for a new career and I chose the science of GIS and art of Cartography. I look eagerly look forward to starting that career.
