Principal Engineer - Privacy Program
The Privacy Program is a collaborative program working with over 140 schools and districts, technology vendors, and privacy advocates so that parents and teachers can make smart choices about the learning tools they use with their children and students, and so that schools and districts can participate in improving the technology used in K‐12 classrooms. The Privacy Program is rooted in transparency.• Developed and maintained a process, toolkit, questions, and an evaluation platform to evaluate privacy policies, terms of service, and basic information security practices of commonly used education technology applications.• Built and maintained multiple APIs to facilitate automated crawling of privacy policies, manage ML pipelines, facilitate privacy evaluations, audit existing evaluations for current information, and deliver completed privacy evaluations for users of privacy.commonsense.org.• Researched and developed multiple custom machine learning models used to augment and improve both efficiency and accuracy of the privacy evaluation process. These are purpose‐built fine‐tuned LLMs (AI) in production from 2020, pre ChatGPT. This work also included building the entire ML pipeline worker queues, and API.• Worked with senior leadership, funders, external partners, research organizations and privacy program director to drive vision and scope of work.• Navigated the various data sources and concerns to provide timely data analysis and visualizations to help convey the state of existing and emerging privacy practices.• Provided guidance and expertise on emerging technical and social trends organization wide.• Created a scalable authoring and document production pipeline that allowed for easy collaboration, iteration, and interlinked data rich reports. This process was used to develop multiple easy to navigate publication‐ready reports that were used in various research and advocacy efforts including informing congressional testimony and FTC action.
