During my tenure at Capstone I was fortunate to work with an amazing team of advisory professionals while serving lender clients to the financial services, pharmaceutical, consumer, food and beverage, publishing, energy, and real estate sectors. One notable opportunity arose from a valuation preparation for the investors and lender clients to a pharmaceutical firm. While performing extensive due diligence on double-digit forecasted sales projections, we applied a generous degree of professional skepticism. We also took a detailed look at the experience, talent and character of the key managers ultimately responsible for leading the company to success. This step is often overlooked in valuation exercises. Research has shown that in business failures, ineffective management is responsible 80% of the time. Research of this management team’s history and prior performance at predecessor companies indicated they had never achieved growth at the levels demonstrated in their projections. This analysis provided our clients with a unique value perspective and prompted the leading lender to adopt our view and they adjusted their investment objectives accordingly. Our clients were pleased we provided them with the information necessary to make an informed decision. I remember the pride our entire team felt when our clients placed great value on our analysis. Anecdotally, we noted that the management team was only able to deliver single digit growth in the first two projection years, as we had reflected in our analysis
