Enterprise Architect
Current
Principal Enterprise Architect / Avp Enterprise Architecture
In May 2008, I accepted a position within the Assurant Corporate Technology (ACT) organization of Assurant, Inc., originally as a Senior Technology Architect (eventually advancing to Principal Enterprise Architect/AVP of Enterprise Architecture). Initially I was part of a small three-person team that built the ACT Architecture Program from scratch. This included defining program goals, scope, direction, methodologies, roles and responsibilities of the new role of “Enterprise Architect”, services to be provided, internal governance processes as well as the integration points with external governance processes, and all tools, templates, deliverables, and standards. I also managed the work assignments of individual Architects, and personally built a vision for a “next-gen” EA program that better facilitated change by directly aligning the Enterprise Architects with members of ACT’s Senior Leadership Team. This “next-gen” EA vision was formally adopted in 2013 and represented a move away from a service-based approach and towards an organizational alignment model. It resulted in a more widespread adoption of the EA Strategic Roadmapping service across ACT (and later across all Assurant IT organizations); an increased role of the Enterprise IT Portfolio that was developed and maintained by the EA group; a more prominent role within IT Standards and Procurement; and the stand-up of a dedicated Solutions Architecture team. As part of the organizational-alignment model I was formally aligned with Assurant’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and spent the last six years reporting “dotted-line” to her and supporting EA functions (strategy, roadmapping, procurement, research, etc.) within the InfoSec domain.
Chief Architect (Acting)
In April 2006 I accepted a position with the Georgia Technology Authority (GTA) as an Enterprise Architect. Almost immediately I began and successfully completed a program offered from the Federal Enterprise Architecture Certification Institute through the California State University at East Bay that resulted in a certification in Enterprise Architecture (EA). In August 2006 I was asked to assume the role and duties of the State’s Chief Architect, which included leading the development of the State of Georgia’s EA Framework and Program. This framework was published in February 2007. Concurrent to that, I led the procurement and deployment of the GTA EA toolset, which includes fat-client architectural modeling tools, a centralized EA Repository, automated data collection capability, an EA portal, and web-based report design tools. Finally, throughout this period, as Acting Chief Architect for the State of Georgia, I was involved in numerous governance, oversight, and planning roles for Executive Branch State agencies. This included partnering with those agencies for project Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V), architectural design reviews, Agency Project Request evaluations, Business Case and Request for Proposal (RFP) development, RFP response evaluation and selection, and statewide IT Strategic Planning including the development of strategies for infrastructure consolidation, new technology deployment, and the movement towards a Statewide Service Oriented Architecture.
It Architect
As an IT Architect at The Home Depot (THD), I played a higher-level leadership role in the design, development, test/certification, and deployment of enterprise-class IT solutions. Specific experience was gained in the various languages, hardware, and technologies involved in the development and operation of high-volume and highly distributed operational reporting systems, enterprise data warehousing, and business intelligence systems. This experience included personally initiating and leading efforts at designing, building, and deploying two new and creative reporting infrastructures throughout the THD enterprise, functioning as the Solutions Architect for THD’s new Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), and being one of three Architects assigned to a newly formed, dedicated Business Intelligence (BI) Architecture/Infrastructure team. Finally, IT Architects play a central role within THD’s Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and IT Solutions Framework and are responsible for providing clear, technically-sound direction for strategic, tactical, and implementation-level challenges. This includes working very closely with assigned Project Managers in guiding individual projects through THD's internal Project Management Methodology.
Adjunct Faculty
Taught Graduate and Undergraduate Computer Science courses including Database Design, UNIX, and System Programming. Thoroughly enjoyed teaching motivated students computer science methods, theory, and use.
Senior Specialist
Upon graduation from Purdue University, I accepted an entry level engineering position with Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company in Burbank, CA writing, using, and supporting numerical analysis software for use in an aerospace engineering environment. For the next 12 years, at three different Lockheed subsidiaries, I continued to build my software development skills in addition to taking on additional responsibility as both a UNIX system administrator and Oracle database administrator. While at Lockheed, I gained experience on a wide variety of hardware, operating systems, and programming languages; finally leaving in Summer 2000 to move to The Home Depot.
