I helped create the first data science and data engineering teams at Blackstone, leading the technology side of the effort. My role included:- designing the program, including hiring and leading the data engineering team (and wearing many hats)- establishing the technical architecture (cloud native, of course) for data engineering and data science, including data lake / warehouse, pipelines, notebooks, and dashboards- expanding the use of external data and data science methods in private equity and real estate deal diligence- evaluating and onboarding various 3rd party tech products (and helping to sunset others)- instituting team practices like version control, project management, documentation, etc. - expanding the use of geospatial technology in the firm- advising portfolio company teams on cloud, data engineering, and data science practices- leading an expansion of analytics throughout the firm, including helping business folks go #BeyondSpreadsheets with Python and dashboardsIt was fun times!

At Ipreo I was involved with primarily two areas: leading the content curation software development team and piloting Ipreo API, a company-wide RESTful API gateway. I also dabbled in data science, taught business folks to use SQL, and helped with the company's cloud adoption efforts.

I led technology for Observer Media, a media company offering premium lifestyle and business titles reaching audiences in the areas of innovation, commerce and luxury. Notable sites include Observer.com, CommercialObserver.com, and Realgraph.co. My role included tech team management, software architecture, design, coding, stability, and strategy for both consumer-facing and b2b media sites. Observer uses a mix of technologies including Python and WordPress. I'm especially proud of creating Realgraph as a "Crunchbase for commercial real estate" during my time at Observer.

Openfolio was a fintech startup that aimed to bring the power of networks - openness, connectivity, collective intelligence - to the world of personal investing.My role included:- Coding (stack = Python, Django, PostgreSQL, Redis, Celery, RabbitMQ, Heroku, Github)- Refactored market data back-end from TempoDB, a time series cloud store, to a more robust solution in PostgreSQL- Rebuilt portfolio accounting subsystem, enhancing flexibility and data accuracy- Added automated unit testing and integration testing, introducing test-driven development patterns to the team- Built continuous deployment solution with CircleCI- Implemented security fixes with the help of the HackerOne community

Focused on the retail sector, Signal Data provided unique insight into store quality, competition, and white space using a geospatial database of more than 600,000 retail and restaurant locations as well as comprehensive analytics and software tools. My role included:- Established the technology stack: Python, MongoDB, ArcGIS, PostGIS, Angular.js, REST SOA, AWS- Coded major portions of the stack: public site, front-end subscriber content, back-end components- Recruited and mentored engineers- Created UX and visual designs for product, marketing, and public site- Managed product pipeline for both major features and weekly sprints- Utilized test-driven development, code review, and continuous deployment

My group within the Technology Team built data products using data science techniques for the S&P Capital IQ platform. Projects included a recommendation engine, fraud detection and visualization, and client value analytics. The Data Science team also deployed a traditional business intelligence stack, including an OLAP data warehouse and ad-hoc reports for product, client development, and client support teams.

These tools enabled collection of key content for the S&P Capital IQ platform, including fundamental financials, earnings estimates, company profile information, news and events, and more. The team was based in Hyderabad, India and included software and database engineers, quality analysts, and business analysts.

I did layout and photo editing for an electronics catalog & web retailer. In the 1900s, it was common for people to shop via "catalog mail order". Retailers would send little books printed on paper through snail mail, and people would call in (with land lines!) to order products from those books. From there it was the same as nowadays; a truck would stop by and deliver your package. When I started at Crutchfield, most of the shopping was done via catalog, and e-commerce was just starting. When I left, a significant portion of sales were online.

I worked in the publishing group at SNL. We put together printed materials (monthly journals) and faxes (daily and weekly) that contained financial information. Remember, this was in the early days of the internet...
