When Benjamin Franklin wrote, “Time is Money”, he must have been thinking about Quality. In business, Quality is one of those areas where the associated costs can sometimes be oh-so apparent, yet at the same time seemingly invisible and unimportant. Quality has been an interest for as long as I can remember; plus I understand the cost involved. Even with the first job I had at age 10, helping my grandfather in cutting, loading, and selling "pulp" wood, I learned quickly the results of work performed well vs. poorly. My job, accurately measuring and marking the lengths of wood, directly impacted how much money my grandfather made from each load of logs (which in turn affected my bottom line). He cut what I had marked, so if the sections were too long, there was a risk the buyer would reject the load since it would not fit into the rail car being loaded. This led to costly rework. On the other hand, if the lengths were short, the load brought less money since the purchase was per pound. That mistake meant I made less money.The Quality ethic has always been at the forefront of my work. The profession demands, above all, integrity and honesty. A quality professional must have excellent communication abilities, a genuine desire to support others, and to continuously improve processes (thick skin doesn't hurt either).Seasoned and educated through formal schooling, industrial training, and most importantly practical experience, my career in the Quality profession has taught me what works and what does not. I am aware everything in a business has cost, even when hidden through rework and non-conformance. Minimizing those costs is one of the largest impacts a quality professional can make.
