In over 25 years of designing and developing major software products and services, I’ve learned that you can only build great products when you first build great teams. As a part of the teams that brought you the video games Ultima Online, Brothers in Arms, and Halo, and in my work leading the design and development of a large-scale, consumer SaaS at Covenant Eyes, I’ve found that a well-led team can harness deep mutual trust, healthy conflict, and bold creativity to launch lucrative, world-changing products—and can have fun doing it. Patrick Lencioni is right: “It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare.” I’ve taught leadership and software development, both as a Hart eCenter Lecturer at SMU and in my own published articles and books. My greatest joy is to shepherd a team through Forming, Storming, and Norming into high-level Performing, seeing people come alive as their talents mesh to create wonderful, world-changing products.
