Droice Labs is an AI company specializing in understanding real-world clinical data to help physicians provide better care to their patients. My job is to lead our efforts to extract meaning from free form clinical text in multiple languages including English, Spanish, Russian, German, and French.

OhmniLabs develops robots focused on the needs of families as opposed to corporations. With the long term goal of creating a companion for the elderly, I implemented a customized, extensible version the Google Assistant for the OhmniLabs telepresence platform.

• Responsible for developing (from scratch) a natural language understanding system which produces structured data from dictated medical text. The system understands more than 100,000 distinct medical concepts, as well.
• Created a end-to-end NLP document processing framework
• Incorporated the open-source UMLS Metathesaurus as the lexical foundation
• Developed a complete semantic parsing system for the medical domain
• Implemented a machine learning system (using Support Vector Machines) for text classification and disambiguation
• Built a team consisting of 6 NLP experts

• Responsible for in-house and licensed technology for converting free text into structured clinical notes for the Dictaphone Healthcare Division.
• Re-architected a rules based approach to Natural Language Processing to one emphasizing data driven techniques and machine learning.
• Researched use of public domain medical ontologies for shallow commonsense reasoning
• Conducted technical due diligence on potential acquisitions and partners.

• Re-architected a product line that uses speech recognition technology to help students become fluent readers.
• Developed a strategy of leveraging open source software, including speech recognition (Sphinx), web infrastructure (Linux, Tomcat, MySQL) and content authoring (based on Eclipse).
• Created a component oriented architecture to serve disparate needs of OEM and direct school products and web based consumer efforts.
• Led the design of an embedded device that would function as a “educational iPod” to free kids from being tethered to a PC

Created the Conversation Manager™, a combination studio and server product that allows large call centers to create automatic “agents” to answer customer service questions based on recorded examples of voice and text interactions• Focused Unveil’s unique natural language technology on a real business problem. • Oriented the company toward over-the-phone.

Co-founded this company focused on building tools and infrastructure for the wireless web. iConverse was unique in its ability to visually create custom markup language for any device including WAP phones, Blackberry handhelds, Pocket PC and Palm PDAs and wired and wireless voice telephones. Played a key role in defining the product vision and architecture.

Responsible for PowerScribe, Articulate Systems' product for medical dictation. Developed server for delayed recognition from (thin) clients, including deferred training and adaptation. Did pioneering work in recognizing over-the-phone dictation

Responsible for revitalizing this vendor of automatic speech recognition systems. VPC developed products for both single user desktop and multi-user telephone markets. The telephony recognizers used a VPC designed DSP board and ran under DOS, OS/2, and a variety of UNIX platforms.Supervised hardware and software engineering staff of 25.

Responsible for the design and development of KBMS, an expert system development tool. KBMS was unique in the market in that it provided automatic connections to a large number of data base management systems, including IMS, IDMS, DB/2, SQL/DS, Sybase, SQL Server, and ORACLE. Created the KBMS product from initial concept to shipping product in 18 months..

Responsible for the commercialization of INTELLECT, a natural language database access system. INTELLECT ran on IBM mainframes under MVS, VM and DOS/VSE. It interfaced with both relational and non-relational data base management systems.
