Huddled behind a small monochrome monitor, I waited for the data to load off the 360k floppy while the 8088 processor spun my fantasy into life. The game was Rogue, and I was ready to dive back into the Dungeons of Doom for the thousandth time ever seeking that Amulet of Yendor.RPG’s were always my passion and I can probably blame that planted seed on a single piece of artwork – “A Paladin in Hell” featured in the 1st edition of the AD&D Players Handbook by David Sutherland. The apex of the RPG experience was the beginnings of the MMO, which consumed me.When a design idea is implanted, it haunts me. Game mechanic exploration shifts in the back of my head while I make eggs, game lore expands while I’m in the shower, and game features must be jotted down so I can go back to bed after waking for a restroom break. A creative exorcism provides relief when I can flesh that idea out completely and bring it to life on paper.Regardless of the property, genre, or scope, the design itself is what is fulfilling to the creative soul. I love making games of all types, but I find products geared towards younger audiences more challenging and rewarding. It’s joyful to send something out into the world and then start anew.
