At the butter production plant in Noordwijk I participated in three WCOM waves.Within the waves I participated in projects regarding to optimalisation of the technical department (e.g. implementation of RCA and FMECA procedures) and improvement of production line performance (e.g. OEE increase by change of production speed and implementation of modifications).

I performed my master thesis at Accell in Heerenveen, this with supervision from the Discrete Technology & Production Automation research department of my studies.Title: ''Dynamical modelling and predictive control of planning & scheduling in parallel line production''Summary:The objective of this thesis was the implementation of Model Predictive Control (MPC) to optimize the planning & scheduling in parallel line production. MPC, an optimal control strategy based on numerical optimization, has proven its value in a large range of industries over the years and has shown potential for an even broader field of implementation. An experiment, Accell Netherlands, that suits the requirements of the research is used to determine to what extent MPC will be of value in the given setting.A dynamical model has been developed that approximates the actual processes of the production department. The optimal control input is determined by solving the finite-horizon dynamic programming problem in a recursive manner. Necessary constraints are added to guarantee feasible outcomes. The optimal control input from MPC is used to further optimize the production. An allocation method has been proposed to separate the production input per production line in an efficient way. A N-level optimization method is proposed that determines the optimal production schedule for each line. Simulations have shown that the optimization method proposed does result in a cost decline. Cost reductions occur due to the MPC making use of the buffer capacity in an efficient way. In addition, simulations show several interesting issues, that should be investigated by making use of alternative test cases/experiments and further extensions to the proposed optimization method.
