I researched material science based work for the united states AEOP program. The phd student I was working with (as well as the other undergraduate assistant) focussed on using elephant trunk skin to replace kevlar as a barrier to stop weapons. We used Matlab to simulate stress strain curves based off of already dead elephant's trunks skin. The research group as a whole was trying to create a synthetic material that resembles the skin because of its properties.
