I have long believed in the connection between movement and mental health. As an experienced personal trainer, choreographer and dance teacher I have a unique lens on how movement, physicality and creativity can combine for positive therapeutic outcomes.Dance/movement psychotherapy (DMP) is a person-centered, strengths based, embodied creative practice where participants are encouraged to consider and strengthen the relationship between their mind and body. DMP is a treatment modality for multiple settings including mental health, substance abuse, eating disorders, neurorehabilitation and neurodiversity.Overarching goals for participants in DMP often include: to improve emotional expression, rebuild a sense of self and foster a positive relationship with the body. DMP focuses on empowerment, trust and confidence in self and others, relationship and social skills. DMP can be entirely a nonverbal process, or it can include verbal processing. Sessions can be held with individuals or groups as appropriate to the needs of the participants and setting.
