I recently "retired" (again) after a year+ working for the Journey Language Center where I thoroughly enjoyed teaching English to adults. I now have private students and am looking to find more. I am especially interested in working with adults who want to refine their English language skills, perhaps in listening (adverbial phrases and contractions), speaking (pronunciation and/or expressions) or in reading (vocabulary and comprehension) and writing (grammar and registries). I have been tutoring for the past 5 years any number of upper-elementary-aged students in reading comprehension and writing. I recently published a novel, Called Home, a novel from the South Dakota prairie. It is available on amazon. I am at work on the sequel. I continue to work as an executive director with Fort Collins Read Aloud, a nonprofit organization with a mission to educate, encourage, and empower parents to be the best and most important teachers for their young children. In one of my roles with the FCRA, I present to parent groups in the Fort Collins area about the importance of language development and reading aloud to babies and children. The backstory: I retired in 2014 from the Boulder Valley School District where I taught Special Education, English Language Development, and Reading. I spent twenty years working with middle and high school students from diverse backgrounds to help them meet the challenges of academic reading and writing as well as working with classroom teachers to help them make their academic content more accessible for all the students in their classrooms.

Executive DirectorFort Collins Read Aloud Jan 2015 - PresentFort Collins, Colorado AreaAs executive director for Fort Collins Read Aloud, a 25- year old nonprofit organization in Larimer County, I train and place adult volunteers in select Poudre School District's K-3rd classrooms to read one-on-one with students in one of their ongoing volunteer programs.Additionally, through funding from Denver's Buell Foundation I am fortunate to be able to continue with a new parent program. Piloted in spring of 2016, set in the Harmony Mobile Home Park in Fort Collins, I met with parents (all Spanish speaking) who lived in the park over five weeks of evening sessions. The conversations with parents were engaging and focused on topics of language development and reading aloud to their babies and toddlers. They loved receiving the new baby board books given them through the support of the Fort Collins Rotary Club grant. Additionally, over the past two years I have presented to parents in the Early Childhood Council for Larimer County programs, Best Start for Babies and Best Start for Toddlers.

Literacy Teacher, English As A Second Language Teacher, And Special Education TeacherBoulder Valley School District Aug 2000 - Jul 2014Centaurus High School, Lafayette, CoI started my career in education as a Special Education teacher in Westminster's Adams 50 School District in 1994 teaching reading to students in small groups at Metz Elementary and Clear Lake Middle School. Using balanced literacy as a guide, my instruction included phonemic awareness development for some students and guided reading instruction for others. Later when I moved to Boulder Valley School District and Lafayette's Centaurus High School in 2000, I again taught reading as well as writing to students in small classes. Though hired as a Special Education teacher, I soon transitioned to Literacy teacher, writing Individual Literacy Plans for students along with teaching Readers Workshop and Writers Workshop. Over the years I became certified in Reading and in English as a Second Language. I helped to establish additional avenues for supporting literacy in high school students by creating Academic Support Centers and co-teaching with content teachers to make their curriculum accessible to all the students in their classroom. -
