During my senior year at Azusa Pacific University, I was selected to be a Research Assistant in the Kinesiology Department. The study was conducted to examine articular cartilage of the knee in recreational runners. As a research assistant, I helped to complete the application that was sent to the Institutional Review Board. Additionally, I recruited research subjects by reaching out to classmates, community members, and local running clubs for people who fit study parameters. Once recruited, I scheduled subjects and met them in the biomechanics lab, performed the study and recorded data by taking ultrasound images of the articular cartilage in the knee. Upon completion, I analyzed and recorded the data. The study process was as follows: each subject had their knee scanned using diagnostic ultrasound to determine the thickness of their knee cartilage. Subjects then walked on a treadmill for 10 minutes at 3.5mph, after which I scanned the knees again. Next, subjects ran on a treadmill at a 9 minute/mile pace (6.6mph) for 4 miles. At the completion of every 1 mile increment, additional knee scans were taken. Scans were taken in a seated position with the back supported and the knee in 120 degrees of flexion. Lastly, subjects were asked to remain in a long sit position for 30 minutes after the running protocol was completed, followed by a final scan of each knee. All data was collected in the Human Performance Laboratory at Azusa Pacific University. The data collection was uploaded to a program called Image J, here I measured the distance of the thickness of the articular cartilage. Each measurement was taken three times, by two different Assistants including myself, to ensure accuracy. After measurement analysis, the data was recorded. Our research is still in process as our goal is to reach an adequate sample size. The team has started compiling data and evidence to support our hypothesis and working towards completion of our research paper.
