The specialized instructional needs of refugees, immigrants, and newcomer students from around the world, are deep-rooted in my career as an educator; being a continual advocate for special populations led to my administrative roles including ESL Program Coordinator, Instructional Specialist, and Assistant Principal. I have received many honors in my career, such as district ESL teacher of the year, HAABE Teacher of the Year, the Texas Association for Bilingual Educators ESL Teacher of the Year and Top 50 ESL Educators in the US. Perhaps my greatest honor has come when my ESL program was featured in a student written article for Houston Chronicle, Fox 26 news, and Voices Breaking Boundaries, all projects focused on refugee and immigrant students and the struggles that they face. The needs and factors in educating and advocating for forced migrants has led me to finding ways to incorporate Restorative Practices and bridging the gaps in language and culture in order to fight misunderstandings and reluctance toward the “new” American way of life.
