Jen E. Lee is a J.D. Candidate at Stanford Law School | Knight-Hennessy Scholar. Colleagues describe them as "I met Jen while I was working as the Legal and Policy Manager at the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Washington Chapter. In her role at the ACLU of Washington, Jen convened a multidisciplinary advocacy group known as the Tech Equity Coalition, which acts as a watchdog, think tank, and political lobbying entity on behalf of vulnerable communities in Washington. Working together in this coalition, Jen first became my mentor, sharing her infinite subject matter knowledge to help me understand how the communities I advocated on behalf of were affected by emerging technologies and why it was important for our interests to be represented. She also shared with me the means and strategies I could use to carry out my own advocacy on behalf of my clients and constituent communities in cooperation with other community advocates and interest groups. More than any other advocate I have ever worked with, Jen consistently de-centers herself and even her own organization in favor of uplifting and supporting the most impacted communities around her and their leaders. While many advocates are satisfied to have the endorsement of those most affected, but then go on to make a name for themselves as the defender of those communities, Jen readily passes on the subject matter knowledge, strategies, connections, and tools for impacted communities to stand up for themselves. This not only results in more effective advocacy, but also uplifts and inspires community leaders like me to be stronger advocates. Another unique strength of Jen’s organizing and leadership is her ability to identify the common threats and goals facing very disparate groups of people, and inspiring them to unite in collective, multi-disciplinary advocacy. Jen also takes care to center each community group as the experts in their own lived experiences. One of the most inspiring aspects for me is the way Jen consistently and unapologetically stands by her expertise and does not diminish herself or her knowledge in the face of power and opposition. Jen respectfully, but firmly speaks truth to power at every opportunity. She reminds us through action that these powers are ultimately responsible to their constituents, their customers, and the communities they operate in and serve, and demonstrates that we each have the power to hold them accountable.
