Over the past few years, I have volunteered. In both public libraries and with philanthropic organizations to assist individuals in the community and to expand my varied experiences to better the communities in which I live and serve. I have also been taking online courses through the American Library Association to further my skills in the areas of library cataloging and preservation. Presently, I volunteer at Simsbury Public Library in the Circulation and Technical Services Division. I pull holds, shelve materials and assist patrons with locating materials. I am working with the Connecticut Historical Society on First Free Saturdays to promote historical events through creative crafts and activities. I am also doing other philanthropic work, such as volunteering at the FAVARH shop in Canton Connecticut. All sales proceeds go to support the FAVARH nonprofit organization and its clients. In addition, I am helping out at Gifts of Love in Avon, Connecticut. I enjoy working with nonprofit groups to foster and promote their mission. Prior to that, at East Hampton Public Library, I was working on a leveling project which involves easy readers and early chapter books so that parents and children can locate “just right” books. I also assisted with reorganizing the collection of materials and changing call numbers and locations of books in the children’s department and assisted with migration to Sierra automation system. Also I helped prepare materials for children’s programs and assists patrons with location of materials. Prior to my volunteer assistance, I worked at the Ellington High School in Ellington, Connecticut as a Library Media Specialist. My job required me to be first and foremost a teaching partner with other educators in the building. My position allowed me to find valuable resources for teachers and students in the major content areas. I am knowledgeable about the research process and current relevant resources available to students in the grade 9-12 and college environment. Working in the public library sector, I am getting more familiar with adult literature and the needs of reading adults in the community. I also continue to attend workshops and read about literature for grades K-12 and college age students. I like to explore ways in which you can apply their knowledge of literature in the classroom.
