The “obvious” answer he had in mind was “followers.” But then he added the most memorable part of the feedback: “don’t dismiss it” he said “how do you get and keep followers?” he asked. I have spent much time considering that exchange. I concluded that getting and keeping followers is, in theory, pretty simple: just add value! But adding value, constantly, takes hard work; it takes a true commitment to others. It takes putting others’ needs before your own. Then there is the matter of how to identify what each & every individual needs and wants. So how do you figure that out? You ask – I concluded … and you keep asking … and that’s what I do. I am told I am an excellent leader – and this simple exchange was at the heart of whatever leadership success I have had. I add value – wherever and whenever I can!Finally, the last thing that separates me from other employees is the fact that I combine that Servant Leadership style with a formal credo and I live and work by that credo. “Do the Right Thing” is far from genius or original thought, but it is sometimes hard to decipher and can be even more difficult to execute. So, for the benefit of those whom I have had the honor to serve, I clarified what that means to me. Its 3 simple actions: 1 – Act in a manner that causes people to Trust you 2 – Treat everyone - regardless of title or role - with Respect 3 – Stand for something – I recommend: stand for Excellence I do my best to keep those three steps in the forefront of all that I do. While that may not make me an ideal employee, the fact that I have put considerable thought into how I want to appear at work certainly makes me a pretty darn good one. It also makes me a rather attractive co-worker. I believe that separates me from many of the new employees who bring that ages old trump card, “industry experience” to work with them.
