I am on a mission to normalize conversations in the dark and messy spots. The spots where the mental health and loneliness epidemics are thriving. We call it The Awkward Zone. The space where we know someone is hurting but are not sure of what to say or do.************Too often we send people to counseling, a therapist, or tell them to “self-care” when what they need is us.A friend, a boss, a manager, a leader, a parent, a coach, a classmate, a co-worker, a doctor, a lawyer, a professor, or even a stranger who knows how to show up for them.It is the care and support of those closest to us that is most critical for our mental health. ****************This awkward zone is just that. It’s awkward:“I’m afraid I’ll make it worse.”“I don’t think it’s my place to step in.”“I have no idea what to say.”"Someone else is handling it."“I have my own burdens, I can’t take on anything else.”In the 10 years I have been researching human care and connection I am finding that we talk ourselves out of connecting with people who are struggling an astounding percentage of the time.We care and see the person struggling. But they don’t feel seen, heard, or valued by you.Empathy but not the right actions.Compassion but no authentic connection. It’s time we start bridging that gap.I’m here to help you cross that bridge.
