My journey in nursing has been an interesting one. Starting in a tertiary ICU and what it was like to have family around at the bedside all hours of the day and night. Working with them and supporting them through their darkest and sometimes happiest days, when they finally can leave the ICU. To step into an Interim Nursing Manager role and find that was THE place I was supposed to be. I could drive change in a way I never thought possible for nurses, beyond being an advocate in the unit-based councils. Then COVID arrived and healthcare changed forever. I learned the process of setting up an Incident Command Center and rotated as a leader to represent the hospital where I was employed in the system Incident Command Center. It was an experience that broadened my knowledge and drive to pursue additional leadership positions. Bedside needed nurses in the ICU and I returned to help while working through the hardships of COVID.I transitioned to a new facility back in my home state of Alaska in an ICU that took all ICU patients including Open-Heart Surgeries and the devices that go with that population. It was another learning area for me and I grew some more. I stepped into the Assistant Nurse Manager role in this unit about 6 months after arriving at the unit and remained in that role for 2 years. Again, it was another step for me to know that leadership is where I want and should be. During my time there I received my Bachelor's in Nursing and enrolled in a Master's in Healthcare Administration program. In December 2023 I transitioned again into a leadership role that will allow me to influence nursing on a level that I never thought I get the opportunity to do. I am the current Magnet and Pathway Program Coordinator for the Alaska Region. The learning curve is steep, but my drive to learn is greater, and learning about Magnet is exceptionally rewarding. Sharing this knowledge with nurses and influencing nursing in another way is powerful and I love this challenge.
