About Jenna Abrams
I recently completed my position as the Educational Director of the Jewish youth movement, Habonim Dror North America. I graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, and received a Bachelor of Science in Family Science in the Spring of 2020. I have had a significant amount of experience working with children from infancy to late adolescence. I have had very diverse positions working with youth and their families from a wide array of cultural backgrounds. I worked as an assistant teacher at a childcare center, as the camper care coordinator at a summer camp, and as an intern at a juvenile detention center. I hope to continue to use my education to work directly with marginalized youth and/or families, and to provide them with culturally sensitive and trauma-informed care.

I worked at the Alfred D. Noyes Children’s Center, a detention center for youth aged 12-18 that holds 57 individuals. I planned and facilitated fun activities and relevant educational programming for the young men and women about topics such as feminism, community, and family. I learned the names and charges of each of the youth in order to develop a trusting relationship. I attended counseling sessions between the youth and a mental health advisor in the mental health department of the center. I assisted in the screening and processing of the youth entering the juvenile justice system.

Camper Care Coordinator
I was responsible for the physical and mental health care of approximately 150 campers (aged seven to 17 at sleepaway camp). I provided continual education and support to bunk counselors, aged 18 to 21, to enhance their skills and comprehension of effective camper care. I regularly intervened in mental health related crises, and created behavior agreements designed for individual camper success resulting in behavior improvements. I performed duties as a member of the leadership team, responsible for the overall health and maintenance of a summer camp that runs from June to August for 150 campers.

With my co-directors, I created the curriculum for the educational process of 15 CITs. I was responsible for caring for the physical, emotional, mental well being of these teens, aged 16-17. I also designed and implemented leadership training program, and oversaw counselors in training in their care of the campers.

I planned and guided tasks like reading, crafts, and circle time, working with diverse age groups (aged 6 months - 7 years). I enforced rules and managed behavior through developmentally appropriate discipline. I was also the music director, and developed lesson plans for group music lessons with 40 students of diverse age groups (aged 2-5). I worked with the parents and directors to formulate a curriculum that met the needs of all students, and prepared students for participation in holiday concerts.
