As a part of my genetics degree, I performed an undergraduate research thesis in the Sweigart laboratory at the University of Georgia. For my thesis, I helped design and implement a project quantifying hybrid necrosis in the Mimulus tilingii complex as a mode of speciation. In addition to the thesis and paper I wrote at the end of the project, I have also had the opportunity to assist in other research projects at the lab investigating reproductive isolation in Mimulus. Through my time at the Sweigart laboratory, I gained experience in project design, microtoming, wax embedding, dyeing Mimulus embryos and pollen, and plant pollination and emasculation. ● Undergraduate thesis, “Quantifying Hybrid necrosis in Mimulus tilingii,” which is used as the example thesis for the Department of Biological Sciences.● Design and conduct a laboratory project on Mimulus tilingii species complex to quantify hybrid necrosis as a potential gene flow barrier; contribute to existing research projects investigating reproductive isolation as a process of speciation and evolution.
