Certified Nursing Assistant
CurrentPerform advanced care for severely disabled patients in their homes for 12-hour shifts. This care allows them to maintain independence, which would be impossible in other settings. Patient advocacy plays a significant role in this homecare position as clients are sometimes not aware of their rights to continuity of care. During this role, I utilized critical thinking skills and worked with on-call nurses to aid in my patients' progression of care. Being the only regular staff for a patient the whole healthcare team requires our documentation to stay updated. I perform hygiene care ranging from full bed baths for clients with restricted movement to showers for those who are mobile. Home care includes companionship; spending hundreds of hours in someone's home, I build rapport with my clients lending a listening ear to their day-to-day issues. Discretion is an essential skill when performing 24-hour care. There are many times when I use this skill to know when my client needs to be alone with family or guests. As my clients slowly lose their ability to do things independently, it can be difficult for them to ask for help. This is where having initiative is a crucial skill.
