As a data scientist in the Data Sciences & Analytics group, I implement deep learning techniques to solve domain-specific problems in the field of chemistry.

I edited chemistry and materials science manuscripts for grammar, word choice, and sentence construction, among other things, largely for non-native English speakers.

I worked with a group of polymer science, computational chemistry and molecular ecology journals. Some of my responsibilities include ensuring publication schedules are met, corresponding with authors, editors, and production teams, examining the scope of the journals, and keeping in touch with the broader scientific community. I also aid in onboarding journals to the in-house editorial office.

I worked to develop a strategy for the industrial development of biopolymers with the startup company Carbonform. Major responsibilities included academic and patent literature searches to keep track of new developments, writing reports to keep other team members updated and share information with investors, outlining market trends, determining feedstock sourcing, exploring unique product ideas, and developing an R&D plan.

I have written science news articles for outlets such as Scientific American, Inside Science (of the American Institute of Physics), Chemistry World (of the Royal Society of Chemistry), and Materials360 Online (of the Materials Research Society). Articles encompass a wide variety of topics, including health, materials science, chemistry, and nanotechnology.Below are a few highlights:

I edited scientific manuscripts for clarity, organization, logical progression, grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. In a number of the reports, I also reviewed the scientific logic, ensured that conclusions were supported by data, and confirmed that each section was complete.

Under the supervision of Professor Jason Locklin, I studied transition metal catalyzed polymerization reactions through the use of density functional theory. Specifically, my focus was on mechanistic aspects of Kumada catalyst-transfer polycondensation. Also, with the assistance of Professor Wesley D. Allen, I updated two quantitative descriptors of sterics in transition metal complexes. These projects were centered around computational chemistry and required the use of electronic structure codes, Mathematica, and Microsoft Office.I also taught laboratory periods for General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I, and Elementary Organic Chemistry. I was responsible for supervising the class, offering assistance, grading lab reports, proctoring exams, and tutoring.

I researched polymeric materials for organic electronics, including photovoltaics and OLEDs, under the supervision of Professor Quyen Nguyen. Here I gained hands-on experience in the fabrication of organic electronics. Because I was a staff researcher, I assisted graduate students with their research, gaining experience as part of a research team. I also taught the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy lab for Analytical Chemistry, where I ran the students' samples and showed them how to work up the data.

I studied cross-linked polymers for use as drug delivery matrices. This research gave me hands-on experience in the synthesis and characterization of polymers, especially those developed for medical uses. I also was the teaching assistant for General Chemistry II lab, where my duties included grading reports and helping students during the lab period.
