Writing for North State Parent (NSP) magazine lets me slip me into the daily lives of bold and brilliant individuals from all over five counties in northern California. With NSP, I have cultivated skills in conducting in-person and phone interviews, gathering the bricks to build articles that display the hearts of people, events, and organizations. Working remotely, I’ve gained project- and people-management experience, complementing my organization and communication skills.

“You put the wheels on the carts of our dreams,” one of my program directors told me. Her whimsical metaphor describes my primary goal as an administrative assistant for four church ministries: to provide the practical support required to turn ideas into events and programs. This practical support usually consists of managing calendars; reserving venues; creating imagery for print and web promotional material; communicating with participants via email, text, and social media campaigns; and tracking payments and participants. CFP? CDFA? CRPC? I had no idea what these financial advising acronyms meant either when I started at Strategic Investment, Chico (SIC). I put my industry-outsider status to good use, however, by making promotional language more accessible to potential clients. At SIC, I also developed industry-approved content during a website overhaul, navigated a CRM system, managed special projects, and hosted value-added client events.

“My wife I shaving a baby.” Uh-oh. Is an unusually hairy baby getting a buzz cut, or is a misplaced space creating a misconception? As I collected reports from staff members to develop into stories and reports for fund development and maintenance, I collected chuckles as well. Writing and editing in France gave me experience with international communication, event planning, and Christian nonprofit operations.

From coaching English-learners to use definite and indefinite articles, to helping master’s students develop their thesis arguments, I gained skills in teaching, communicating, and interacting compassionately with diverse populations.
