Light consulting as the Australian English expert on an inclusive language project, localising a tool that provides language guidance to users of word processing software.Essentially I reviewed and provided advice on rude/offensive words & phrases. The aim of the tool is to prevent bias/discrimination against people in terms of gender, age, socioeconomic status, disability, race/ethnicity or other cultural differences.Also co-wrote a report summarising contextual/background information on relevant social, economic or political issues which could influence language choice & interpretation.

Organising events, activities and communications for my local EA* group. This involved, among other things:• Contacting speakers and hosting weekly talks on a range of topics such as global health & poverty, animal welfare, existential risks to humanity, and climate change;• Creating events & advertising; and• Running a weekly fellowship/reading group.*EA (Effective Altruism) is a philosophy and movement addressing the question: how can we do the most good with our limited time and resources? We use evidence, compassion and careful thinking to try and improve wellbeing / reduce suffering in this world.

Infographic design, comms and light copyediting for Family Empowerment Media (FEM), an evidence-based charity which runs radio campaigns in Nigeria to increase knowledge about contraception and family planning.*I created graphics and helped to manage FEM's social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter) – posting weekly updates, infographics, photos and other material, communicating FEM's work to stakeholders, donors and other interested audiences.Also developed a Communication Guide for the organisation, mainly to guide staff and volunteers on visual aspects such as colours, fonts and graphics (a typical "style guide") as well as language usage (especially with respect to contraception: some words are taboo or culturally sensitive).*Ultimately to reduce the 89,000+ annual maternal & infant deaths from pregnancy-related complications that occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Within mobile apps and other online services, coordinated the addition of multilingual support in an application that enables vulnerable Australians to report their income to access welfare payments.Developed skills in UI design and User Experience research - building prototypes with Axure RP9 and Adobe XD, and helping with user testing. Progressing well with a course on Interaction Design.Helped out as Business Analyst for a new 'Click to Call' feature which will enable customers to dial directly through to a staff member if they fail to report their income online. In spare time, designed a central translation repository to streamline processes and allow Business/Multicultural teams to manage their own content.

An enlightening, engaging 8-week experience participating in the Stanford Introductory Fellowship for Effective Altruism. This involved readings & discussions of key texts such as Will MacAskill's "Doing Good Better", sections of Toby Ord's "The Precipice", book excerpts by Peter Singer and many others on a range of topics (longtermism, animal welfare, global health & poverty, criticisms of EA).

Australian English Language Expert for a team within Lionbridge Technologies, Inc. working on Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence projects. This involved:• Tuning the output of Virtual Assistant models, adjusting phonetics as well as pitch, intonation, rate and other linguistic parameters.• Annotating data in the form of video/audio or text e.g. to improve homonym identification.• Providing utterance variants for Virtual Assistants in Australian English.• Interacting and communicating feedback to the client and managers in Spain and Finland.

I was part of the myGov and GovPass Innovation Crew (MaGIC) working on a nationwide digital identity solution using Scaled Agile methodology. This exciting and ambitious project leads the way to a simpler, quicker and more organic way of proving your identity when accessing both government and private sector services.As Product Owner for the Exchange, I owned a key component of the identity verification process and am working with a technical team as well as business stakeholders to develop the product, feature by feature.

Within the ICT arm of my agency I worked to extend our services to customers who speak a language other than English, to lessen the high demand on our translators and interpreters and make information equally accessible regardless of cultural background.Also assisted with the development of Virtual Assistants (VAs, chatbots, digital assistants) to handle queries relating to social welfare, and divert traffic away from our extremely busy phone lines. I had 2 main activities:• Conversational Analysis and data querying using Python and SQL in Azure Databricks to examine how customers are responding to the chatbots. Using text summarization, sentence matching, LDA topic analysis and other techniques, I identified areas of improvement for the chatbots and liaised with business areas to deliver a more helpful service to customers.• A central solution for managing bot content. The 'Bottal' application would be used by business teams developing content for students, job seekers, pensioners and other social groups. As Scrum Master and co- Product Manager for this application, I drove the technical build by coordinating tasks across a range of staff and making design decisions for the overall product.

Under the National Graduate Program, I contributed evidence-based research to public policy by analysing enormous datasets mostly related to welfare and income support payments. I attained high proficiency with SAS and SQL programming/querying languages which I used every day. The role also exercised my communication and writing skills - through research briefs, quality assurance processes and presentations where I communicated key findings to diverse stakeholders.The graduate program also included many fun and interesting events as well as networking opportunities. Highlights included:• Writing funny lyrics for a Disney/innovation-themed musical skit we performed on-stage in small groups! Ours was called "Agraddin"• Being paired with an excellent mentor from the Senior Executive Service• Travelling interstate to experience the ground-level reality of customers and staff at front-line service centres• Completing a Diploma of Government at CIT with my new colleagues• Numerable talks and morning teas opening our eyes to life in the Public Service

While studying at university I tutored a 7-year-old boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Tasks included:• Preparing fun, engaging activities and worksheets aligned with the Australian School Curriculum as well as the child’s individual needs. • Guiding my student in literacy, numeracy and hands-on science activities.• Attending meetings with his parents and therapist.

During university I took on the part-time job of guiding schoolchildren in Mathematics and English at an extra-curricular learning centre. I also worked as front desk manager, attending to parents’ concerns in person and by phone.Tasks included:• Teaching Maths & English within a dynamic classroom environment• Marking worksheets and assembling files• Communicating with parents, other tutors and my manager by phone and in person

Conducted hands-on Science workshops as part of school holiday programs funded by the City of Melville. So far we have made robotic walking animals based on Dutch and Japanese techniques as well as rocket-cars which use the principle of propulsion to blast off down a race-track!How did this all start? A while back I volunteered my assistance to a fantastic Science communicator, roboticist and friend with some of his first ventures. After he moved overseas I was approached by staff from the City of Melville Discovery Centre and asked to run more activities during school holidays. Absolutely don't regret saying yes!

Conducted linguistic fieldwork for Professor Gerry Docherty (Dean of Research, Griffith University), gathering data for a sociolinguistic & phonological study of Australian English.Tasks included:• Recording university students in conversation with each other and their parents, in a recording studio.• Observing speakers' phonology - essentially the way they pronounced a range of words• Corresponding with the head researcher and his Perth representative via email, phone and in person.
