Graduate Regenerative Medicine Research Intern

Chicago, Illinois, Us

I will be taking on a research project examining the correlation of the structure and function of collagen to the physiological presentation in pelvic organ prolapse (POP) patients. To do this, I will be assisting with developing biocomposite scaffolds (e.g., collagen-CNT, silk-CNT, collagen-silk, etc.) via electrospinning techniques and promote stem cell differentiation in these to generate neural cells. I will be helping observe fibroblast collagen productivity in response to electrostimulation. This same project can also be aimed to revive fibroblast productivity in chronic wounds in diabetic patients, which is a project I studied in a little more depth through my research proposal project in the course MBT 513 for Research Planning, Design, and Execution. This kind of work may eventually open up the possibility for physicians to use collagen-monitoring clinical tests to prevent POP development, repair chronic wounds in diabetes patients, and reduce unnecessary invasive surgical procedures. The biotechnological techniques I expect to use for this internship are electrospinning, microscopic characterization, cell culturing, electrostimulation, protein extraction, cell viability and proliferation assaying (MTS), immunofluorescence imaging (Alexa Fluor), gene expression assaying (RT-qPCR w/ Taqman), and statistical analysis.Key terms: chronic wound healing and repair, pelvic organ prolapse, collagen, fibroblasts, connective tissue, smooth muscle, fiber mechanics, real-time polymerase chain reaction, atomic force microscopy, electrostimulation, immunofluorescence, tissue engineering, nanophysics, stem cell differentiation, electrospinning, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine
