Experienced higher ed administrator and partner to colleges and universities. Finance and budget expertise, anchored by a mission-centered background in grants and program development, philanthropy, and healthy functioning of non-profit organizations and boards. I bring a financial lens to the collaborative task of aligning resources--money, people, knowledge, energy, creativity--around the work most important to achieving mission objectives. In nonprofits, money can only ever be a means, not an end. I'm in higher ed consulting because effective use of resources helps institutions do more and better mission work to make our corners of the world more just, more equitable, more safe, more sustainable, more loving, more welcoming.

Partnering with colleges and universities to bring a financial lens to strategic problem-solving.

Worked with the VP for Finance and Administration, faculty and senior administration, and trustees to analyze and project the university's finances. Provided analysis and advice to help leadership align institutional resources—people, plant, program, revenues, endowment, debt capacity—with strategic objectives and institutional mission, vision, and values.Oversaw the Financial Services team, including accounting, budgeting, and financial planning & analysis. Played a leadership role in crafting Lawrence's 10 year reaccreditation submission in 2018, co-chaired a 2021 visioning task force to set long-range context for the next strategic plan, and contributed to a 2022 strategic initiative plan by leading a capital priorities group as well as financial analysis for the overall initiative. I collaborated daily with stakeholders across campus; worked hand-in-hand with Facilities, IT, HR, Enrollment, and Academic Affairs; and assisted the VP in supporting several Board of Trustees and shared governance committees. My specialty is seeing how all the pieces fit together, and developing financial analysis--and audience-appropriate storytelling--to support mission-focused decision making. This included building a comprehensive multi-year financial model, faculty pay equity analysis, and annual and multi-year capital planning. As a Finance leader who came up through sponsored research and philanthropy work, I am focused on turning financial data into actionable insights. There is never enough money or time to do all the work that deserves doing; so how do we invest those limited resources in the things that will yield the most powerful mission impact?

Worked with federal and state grantmakers, and local and national foundations, as well as collaborative principal gifts work with individual philanthropists. Responsible for all aspects of grants and sponsored research support, including project development, proposal writing and editing, submission, and post-award management and reporting, as well as pre- and post-award compliance oversight. As a grants professional at Lawrence, I collaborated with faculty members, staff, and senior leadership to secure and manage more than $22 million in grants and gifts to advance Lawrence's liberal arts mission and strategic objectives. This decade of work was exhilarating. Everything from plasma physics to Tibetan linguistics, from leaky plumbing to inclusive pedagogy, from suicide prevention to early childhood education--I got to learn about and support virtually every part of the work of a liberal arts college. I loved the intense collaborations with faculty and campus leaders, and the challenge of finding just the right funder and showing them how our project could help them achieve the change they wanted to see in the world.

Learned the art and craft of fundraising in a sophisticated and successful annual giving shop. Managed the student phonathon; coordinated more than 80 class agent volunteers; wrote direct mail appeals; cultivated, solicited, and stewarded a portfolio of alumni donor prospects.
I joined the board of newVoices choir (then White Heron Chorale) in 2008, was elected president of the board for a two year term (2015-17), then served as past president (2017-2019). I established and chaired a governance committee and led a governance overhaul including new bylaws, instituting director and officer terms and term limits, and board succession & renewal planning. I am proud to have been involved in many of the exciting changes that newVoices has experienced in recent years: a Community Foundation capacity building grant, changing the organization's name to better reflect its regional impact and diverse appeal, development and implementation of a strategic plan, and a systematic governance review that strengthened the board's oversight and strategic leadership. NewVoices is dedicated to building community through high-quality, affordable choral music that challenges, uplifts, and enriches us all; it was a privilege to spend a decade serving this wonderful organization.
