Three decades of experience in regional, state and federal conservation policy, advocacy, and strategic planning for NGOs, government and civic institutions. Expertise in leading large, matrixed, diverse teams and in change management. Currently, Senior Director with The Pew Charitable Trusts Environment portfolio leading the newly formed US Conservation program focused on protecting biodiversity and building climate resilience for people and nature. Prior to this, I was the Director of US Coastal and marine conservation at Pew managing g a national team advancing local, state and federal policies to protect and restore ecologically significant coastal habitats, by addressing impacts from climate change and other anthropogenic threats. Prior to this position, I was a Senior Officer in Pew's Strategy department where I oversaw the conservation planning for Pew projects within the organization’s two environment portfolios, the Americas and International. For both environment areas, I managed long-term strategic planning, tracking the progress of policy initiatives and campaigns, and developing the annual program plans for the CEO and the Pew Board of Directors. Planning efforts included western lands conservation, flooding policy and fisheries management in the U.S. and internationally, establishing marine protected areas throughout the world’s oceans, combatting illegal fishing, protecting tuna stocks and sharks, and land conservation in Australia’s Outback and Patagonia. Before joining Pew, I was the Executive Director of Bluestem Communications where for close to ten years I managed a professional staff of seven people, the board, the budget, human resources, programs, fundraising, and grants. Bluestem Communications is a non-profit environmental communications organization that is hired by other non-profits, foundations, and government agencies to develop campaigns, create behavior-change strategies, guide coalitions and direct strategic planning. During my tenure, we completed projects for National Wildlife Federation, American Rivers, Texas Land Trust Council, National Forest Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Chicago among many others.

I have been working in communications for more than twenty years and have worked with many national and local non profit organizations, government agencies, municipalities and businesses. One of my most significant projects has been building and leading the Mississippi River Network, a 50+ member coalition of national, state and local non-profit organizations. The program has received consistent support from several foundations for the past eight years, which is a testament to the success of the Network. Oversight of the Network has included developing the coalition’s national public engagement campaign to protect the Mississippi River. In five years, the campaign has recruited 18,000 people to support the River and has united the environmental advocacy community around clear asks that played an integral role in the passage of federal Farm Bill conservation programs and helped pass the recent US Clean Water Rule.My entrepreneurial experience, whether building my own consulting business or growing Bluestem's consulting business has resulted in securing contracts with dozens of new clients every year including: Texas Land Trust Council, Alliance for the Great Lakes, Lake County Stormwater Management Commission, National Wildlife Federation, American Forest Foundation, American Farmland Trust, Meyer Memorial Trust and the Willamette River Initiative, Lake Forest Open Lands Association, City of Dublin Ohio, Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District, Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy, Winnebago Lakes Council, V3 Engineers, Geosyntec, ComEd, Lake County Forest Preserve District, Cook County Forest Preserve District, Chicago Wilderness and many others. -
