WHO WE ARECycling Without Age is a global movement started in 2012 by Ole Kassow in Copenhagen, Denmark and has now spread to 42 countries around the world. Volunteers (“pilots”) sign up to take elderly passengers for trishaw rides – the pilot pedals in the back and two passengers ride in the front. As of March 2019, more than 1,600 chapter locations around the world offer Cycling Without Age from over 2,200 trishaws – and the number keeps growing. More than 29,000 pilots ensure that elders, and those who can’t cycle on their own, get outside on trishaws to enjoy the fresh air and the community around them. OUR GOALTo break elders free from social isolation and make them smile with the simple act of a bike ride. We enable those who can’t ride a bicycle themselves to share in the joy of the activity and offer continued mobility outdoors. We give them the right to wind in their hair. HOW IT WORKSVolunteer pilots sign up for rides with passengers as often as they want. Cycling Without Age is less about volunteering in the traditional sense of the word, and more about active citizenship. Citizenship driven by a desire to get involved and to make a real difference for someone. It’s about creating relationships between people.
