Research Technician
CurrentMain responsibilities: • Maintaining, runing and monitoring the NLH research facility in Newlyn, including care of brood-stock, larval and juvenile lobsters. • Acting on call as and when the rota dictates, providing 24/7 cover for the hatchery, holding a pager for out of hours cover and responding to emergencies as they arise. • Developing and operating marine recirculating aquaculture and associated abstraction systems, ensuring Life Support Systems (LSS) are maintained in a clean and functional state. Working with the Senior Technician to constantly improve the operation of the hatchery LSS and procedures. • Collecting and recording data on the daily operations within the hatchery and associated research trials. Assisting with the collection of samples and data for analysis and providing written and verbal reports when required.• Working with the Senior Technician and Head of Production Science and Development to ensure that the hatchery and associated workspaces are adequately equipped. Ensuring that hatchery consumables are kept in stock, ordering where necessary. • Collecting brood-stock and liaising with commercial fishers and industry stakeholders as appropriate. • Releasing juvenile lobsters through appropriate routes. • Assisting with essential maintenance of the Charity’s capital assets. • Assisting collaborative partners in ensuring successful delivery of the GEMALOR project. • Supporting and delivering educational outreach and fundraising activities. • Supervising volunteers when required in accordance with the Hatcheries volunteer procedures. • Undertaking any reasonable duties as may be required within the general scope of the job.
