“You must be crazy.” I remember saying those words to my husband when he told me that we might have to sell our home in Northern California and move to Texas. Debt and paperwork had forced our hand, as new rules and regulations had made many small businesses in Cali unsustainable – including our walnut-and-rice farm.And yet, my initial reaction was still disbelief. I was reluctant: to leave our home and all its memories behind, to settle in a new and unfamiliar city, and to say goodbye to all my friends. Well that was that, we were moving to Texas.As we pulled into the driveway of our new home, just an hour outside of town, I could clearly see the challenges in front of me. My husband would take the loss of his family ranch pretty hard; I’d have to deal with missing all my friends in Cali; we both were strangers in this new city.Three years later, we realize that our decision was the best one. I’m no longer a stranger to my city.
