I write and teach about how the past shapes our present, but also how it can expand our options for potential futures.I am a social and cultural historian of early modern France and the French Atlantic. My first scholarly monograph Defining Culinary Authority: The Transformation of Cooking in France, 1650-1830 (Louisiana State University Press, 2013) examined how urban cooks accrued significant power over the training, policing, and purveying of food in public spaces. Positive reviews in the American Historical Review, Canadian Journal of History, H-France listserv, and the UK’s Reviews in History website indicate global reception of this research. My second monograph, Bad Subjects: Libertine Lives in the French Atlantic, 1619-1814 was published in July 2023. Bad Subjects investigates hundreds of cases of libertinage drawn from the police and judicial archives of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century France and its Atlantic colonies alongside the literature obliquely associated with or directly inspired by these proceedings.As coeditor of the Journal of Women's History, I am actively engaged in the daily review of research articles, solicitation of expert reviewers, and timely communication with authors. However, editors of scholarly journals today must reach beyond the paywall to seek out potential readers in a variety of social media networks and online forums. Under our stewardship, the Editorial Team of the JWH advertises each new issue on H-Net. We maintain an active website with news, events, and an authors’ blog. We developed a significant following on social media and launched a podcast in collaboration with the New Books Network. We have made presentations at the Western Association of Women Historians (WAWH), and spoken to numerous graduate programs on the topic of “How to Get Published in an Academic Journal.” Our quarterly “Editorial Note” is only one of a half-dozen ways that we engage the scholarly community of women’s historians.I serve as the Director of Graduate Studies for the University of Oklahoma's History Department, and have served on the Committee A for the University of Oklahoma's Women's and Gender Studies Department. In these roles, I have advocated reforms to make higher education more accessible and more inclusive.
