I am a licensed psychiatrist and have practiced in California for the past 26 years. I have extensive experience treating patients with serious mental illness in our communities (in county MH clinics, jails and prisons). Currently I conduct court ordered evaluations in fourteen counties in California and I teach how to conduct evaluations and write reports and how to create individualized psychiatric treatment plans. My specialties include PC1368 (Competency to Stand Trial) evaluations, PC1369 (Antipsychotic Medication Evaluations), PC1001.36 (Pre-Trial Mental Health Diversion) evaluations, Faretta Waiver Competency to Represent Oneself evaluations and LPS Conservatorship evaluations. I am especially interested in anosognosia, Capgras Syndrome and Extreme Overvalued Beliefs. In my clinical work I served as the psychiatrist at Humboldt County Correctional Facility for 8 years (from 2010-2018) and at the Community Corrections Resource Center clinic from 2011 until 2018. I served as the psychiatrist at Del Norte County Correctional Facility from 2018 to 2021 (in addition to seeing patients at the outpatient clinic and serving as the medical director for the Alcohol and Other Drug Services). I served as a part time psychiatrist at Avenal State Prison from 2005-2007. I am a member of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL), the Forensic Mental Health Association of California (FMHAC), the Neuroscience Educational Institute (NEI) and NAMI Humboldt. I have attended the annual NEI Congress yearly for 9 years, attended the CA DSH Forum on MH Diversion in 2019, the FMHAC annual conferences four times and a number of their trainings on forensic evaluations and numerous AAPL webinars. I attended the day-long trainings on competency to stand trial evaluations given by the Judicial Counsel of California (JCC) in November 2023 and March 2024. I have qualified as an expert for the purposes of testimony on psychiatry in Humboldt, Trinity, Colusa, Amador, Lassen, Napa, Siskiyou, Sonoma, Modoc, Tehama, Del Norte, Santa Barbara, Glenn and Sierra County Superior Courts. I have conducted over 700 PC1368 evaluations, over 300 PC1369 evaluations, over 100 LPS evaluations and over 50 PC1001.36 evaluations. In my free time I advocate at the local and state level for patients with SMI and anosognosia and explore the wild and scenic beaches, rivers and mountains in Humboldt county.
