Research Interests & Expertise:Fluid mechanics applied to environmental and geological fluidsMulti-phase and variable-density flow and transport in porous mediaComputational fluid dynamics (CFD) and numerical modelingSoftware engineering for scientific computing and applied mathematicsDeep oceanic and permafrost-associated methane hydratesCold regions hydrology/flows involving water/ice phase change (permafrost)Submarine groundwater discharge and geohydrologyRenewable energy; enhanced geothermal systems; reservoir managementMy research focus is in environmental fluid mechanics, with an emphasis on subsurface and submarine flows at continental margins. I am interested in multi-phase and variable-density flow and transport in the environment and its role in the evolution of deep-oceanic and permafrost-associated methane gas hydrate deposits, submarine permafrost in the Arctic, and geothermal systems. I use applied mathematics and computational methods as a research tool and develop numerical models to study these problems.

National Research Council Postdoctoral FellowDesert Research Institute Jan 2014 - Nov 2015Reno, NvAs a post-doc at the Desert Research Institute in the Hydrologic Sciences Division, I was supported by the National Research Council's Methane Hydrate Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. I studied Arctic permafrost-associated methane hydrates deposits and their role in the methane budget as these reservoirs respond to climate change, under the supervision of Prof. Bruce Buffet at the University of California, Berkeley. This study was relevant for understanding how density-driven flows, such as submarine groundwater discharge, affect the evolution of submarine permafrost and the stability of gas hydrates on the shallow circum-Arctic continental shelf.Projects under the National Academies of Sciences NETL Methane Hydrates Postdoctoral Fellowship: • Physical modeling of relict Arctic submarine permafrost and gas hydrate deposits on the circum-Arctic continental shelf under climate change. Collaborators: Bruce Buffett at the University of California Berkeley.• InterFROST Project member, an intercomparison of codes for Thermal-Hydrological coupled heat and water transport in permafrost regions. website: https://wiki.lsce.ipsl.fr/interfrost/doku.php?id=home• International Permafrost Association (IPA) Working Group on submarine permafrost mapping. Collaborators: Paul Overduin at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), Potsdam, Germany.Other research projects:• Numerical modeling of turbulent heat and salt transport properties controlling basal melt rates at the McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica. Collaborators: Scott Tyler at the University of Nevada, Reno. -
