As Dean of Undergraduate Studies, I oversaw the Division of Undergraduate Studies at SF State, which includes the offices of curriculum development, academic assessment and accreditation, program review, general education, advising, tutoring, articulation, and writing across the curriculum. I was also the dean of students who have not yet declared their major.

While Chair of Stanford's English Department from 2008-2011, I led the department in a major curriculum redesign and expanded English and Humanities outreach. I was part of a small team (SUES, the Study of Undergraduate Education at Stanford) that undertook a comprehensive revision of Stanford's General Education requirement from 2010-2012. I also served as Director of Stanford's interdisciplinary Medieval Studies Program and co-Director of its Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies, which I co-founded with Paula Findlen (History, Stanford) in 2006. My other Stanford experience included serving as chair of the Committee for the Review of Undergraduate Majors (C-RUM), Faculty Fellow at Stanford's Center for Teaching and Learning, and as a member of Stanford's Faculty Advisory Committee for the Haas Center for Public Service, Humanities and Arts Appointment and Promotion Committee, Faculty Senate, and numerous other departmental and university-wide committees.

As Director of Integrated Learning, I coordinated integrative learning communities and capstones at Stanford through the office of the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education.

The focus of my fellowship year was student learning, engagement, and achievement, which I pursued at San Jose State and through visits to universities known for their innovative and successful undergraduate programs.
