EducatorDelta School District 37, British Columbia Sep 1996 - Jul 2022After 24 years as an educator & 20 as a parent, my skill set is quite varied. As an educator, I have been acting Vice Principal & Teacher In Charge, supported staff in solving their technology troubles & led staff in ways to incorporate technology tools in their teaching; taught students website design, blogging, and various computer programs, I’m quite comfortable with the Google Suite, Wix, WordPress, Word/Pages, PowerPoint/Keynote & decently comfortable with Adobe InDesign, & Excel/Numbers; I’ve coached sports, taught art, language arts, social studies, math, STEM; & set up an assistive technology lab. As a district coordinator, I supported elementary staff in purchasing & implementing real tools & coding/robotics in their practice which required leading large & small workshops, visiting schools to co-teach, presenting on Pro D Days, & coordinating conferences. As well, I maintained a web platform of resources to provide continued support for district staff. Outside of school as a parent, I have been swim club President/Vice President/Swim Meet Manager, hockey team manager & show case tournament media guide developer, basketball coach, a Dry Grad Committee Chair & Communications Director; volunteer web manager for a Dog Breeder & a Competitive Baseball team. I also have varied interests: played fastpitch, done a couple triathlons & ran a couple 10k events, just getting into Curling, love walking trails with my dog, enjoy my electric bike, and love guiding my 17 & 20 year old kids to determine their best paths forward in life...whatever fulfills them & makes them happy, contributing members. -
Classroom Teacher & Educational FacilitatorDelta School District 37, British Columbia Sep 2019 - May 2020Too many youth pass through our education system feeling disenchanted, alone, unsuccessful, overwhelmed or unprepared and families & educators have too much on their plates. Our society is overwhelmed & mental health needs a boost. What if we revamped our educational practice to include more real world, tangible and even globally responsible experiences not just for those who excel in school, but for those who struggle with learning inside the box & from the same seat day after day. All of our youth need to feel like they can learn new things & that they can contribute, but not all our youth can function fully within the confines of our current system & sooner or later they silently or not-so-silently “fall between the cracks.” It’s a shame to lose that untapped resource for no reason other than they never realized their potential or believed they had anything of value to share. Imagine easing the stress of our overburdened system by connecting the wider community with schools in an effort to seal those “cracks.” The wealth of community experience to tap into would be boundless as would the opportunities for cross-generational, cross-cultural learning. Imagine the new levels of understanding we could reach. Would our youth & adult populations not reap the benefits of learning how to interact positively with one another through knowledge sharing & connection? With today’s such varied learning needs & higher incidence of social isolation across all age groups, should we not find new paths forward that could also benefit the larger communities? The experiences & skills of our adult population should be honoured & passed down. At the same time, our youth have much to teach the wider community. There is a way to begin building the bridge between what we’ve always done & what we should be doing. All that’s needed is a mind shift on how to educate & an openness to give something intriguing & new a try. Our world needs a fresh perspective.
