About Jen Hamilton

As a teen, I saw my family’s business (a local hardware store where they knew everyone’s name) quickly go under when Home Depot first came to town. It was then that a fire started to burn deep inside me. I had no clue how, but I just knew I would do something to support good-hearted small business owners and leaders fight to stay alive and win.It wasn’t that Home Depot was the predetermined winner (though as a teen, that is what I thought). My grandparents, parents, and uncles didn’t know how to compete and still win in their own way. Their loss was due to their lack of business know-how and self-doubt. What really ended their American Dream of small business ownership was that they had no strategy and experienced leadership to navigate a changing business environment and come out winning. From starting out as a CPA to now as a Fractional COO and advisor to CEOs and COOs, I love learning, advising, and executing strategies that fortify a business to withstand any storm. But not just any business - a business that is up to making the lives they impact better. Just as my grandparents and their children did. Most business advisors give you more ideas - leaving it to you to figure out how to execute them and decide which one first. Ideas are great, but now what? There are way too many ways to run a business with no clear plan. Running a business shouldn't be this hard. Should it? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️If you are up to great things with your business and either are on a growth path or see a rocky road ahead, let’s chat. I would be honored to guide you in strategically stepping forward as the hero of your business and serving the people you, too, know by name. Book a get-to-know-you-call and leave with at least one quick win to address a business opportunity or challenge that stands in your way. https://calendly.com/jenhamilton-coo/introjen@HamiltonCOOs.com

Hamilton Coos Dec 2023 - Present
My passion lies in nurturing the growth and success of small businesses. With over two decades of experience steering companies toward their visions, I've learned that the heart of every successful business is its operational leadership. As a Fractional Chief Operating Officer (COO) and a mentor for COOs and Fractional COOs, I dedicate myself to the mission of saving and empowering small businesses by emphasizing strategic leadership, leading the leaders, and executing plans with precision.🌱 Why I Do What I DoEvery small business has the potential to create significant impact. However, to turn this potential into reality, strategic operations and effective leadership are critical. I found my calling being and supporting the COO, often the unsung hero of the business world. I aim to bridge the gap for businesses at a critical juncture of their growth, by bringing in the business acumen and leadership they need through a COO.🚀 My VisionMy vision is simple, and it makes me jump out of bed excited to get to work: a world where small businesses thrive, not just survive. Why? Our economy, communities, and families count on small businesses—Small Business Founders are the original American Dreamers. Through leading as a Fractional COO or mentoring COOs, I share insights on leading with empathy, fostering a culture of accountability, and executing strategic plans that align with the company's long-term goals.✨ How I Help- Strategic Leadership: Assisting businesses in defining and refining their vision, aligning operations with their goals for a greater impact.- Leading Leaders: Empowering teams to lead with confidence, fostering an environment where innovation and productivity flourish.- Execution Excellence: Implementing efficient systems and processes to turn plans into actions and visions into realities.🌐 Let's Connect! jen@HamiltonCOOs.com

    Wolf'S Edge Integrators Dec 2021 - Nov 2023
    Woodmere, New York, Us
I bring my over 20 years of experience in creating team and operational efficiency and effectiveness to companies and not-for-profit organizations. I use these superpowers to help entrepreneurial business owners and not-for-profit Executive Directors breakthrough when they're hitting the ceiling with their organizations. How?As a Fractional COO, I helped burnt-out visionary founders by managing the day-to-day operations of the business so they can focus on profit and impact growth and do what they love to do most. I held the Leadership Team accountable, bring harmony to teams, execute business and strategic plans, and keep the company focused on the most important goals. Why?Purpose-driven organizations and companies are up to achieving big goals and world-changing visions. What gets in their way is themselves... Most great plans, leaders, and teams are stopped by team conflict, unclear expectations, lack of accountability, ever-shifting priorities, and inconsistent processes and procedures. It doesn't have to be this way. These challenges can be a thing of the past with the right COO.This is why I LOVE taking my geeky gifts of being a COO and bringing them to growing organizations that can't quite afford a full-time COO - just yet. As a Fractional COO, I love working with different clients to bring the best strategies, teams, and processes and grow them to the point where I replace myself with a full-time COO to sustain their growth and ever-increasing their positive impact in the world.

  • Consultant Allies
    Chief Executive Officer
    Consultant Allies Sep 2017 - Mar 2020
Consultant Allies’ mission was to empower consultants and coaches to take themselves and their practice to new heights. As the leader of this professional association for consultants and coaches, I was the chief connector and met with over 500 professionals while leading this community.During those conversations, a theme arose. Most of them had not figured out how to consistently attract and land clients. Sure, they would have hit-and-miss results, but nothing sustainable. When there was a lack of consistency, I focused on getting to the core of this problem and solving it with my two favorite tools to permanently solve problems: education and systems.Realizing this HUGE need and lack of real answers to these critical problems, I turned to Betsy Jordyn and other educators and service providers to create strategic partnerships to teach, serve, equip, and empower our community. I also put two systems in place for working through the problems together: 1) monthly meetings by focus areas (marketing, sales, operations, strategy, IT, and HR) with member and guest speakers who have expertise and solutions to their challenges and 2) created and filled ambassadors roles in various geographical areas to facilitate members and guests to meet in their locations and have leaders and peers to turn to with workshops and facilitated activities to solve the challenges in their marketing, sales, and operational needs of their small businesses.I loved engaging with our collaborative members and the fun of growing the organization from a few members to over 50 across North America with volunteer leaders aligned with a common mission to improve themselves and the consulting and coaching profession. Many members still work together and support each other years later as they continue to grow their businesses.
  • Institute For Mastering Success
Chief Executive Officer - Small Business Coach And Operations & Hr Consultant
Institute For Mastering Success Feb 2011 - Mar 2020
I first invested and engaged in professional development over twenty years ago. Hands down, this caused my success in my career as I had discovered how to break through my own barriers, leading to my AHA moment that I could do this for others. I would go on to lead my clients, co-workers, and volunteers to achieve their own success and fulfillment and enjoy the ride too.As a professional development and operations guru, I heard all the time from small business leaders that they were frustrated when employees were not completing their work correctly, following processes, or delivering on time. My clients engaged with me to develop their company's leaders, managers, and staff. I guided them through implementing the processes to align with their strategic plan. Their companies began to operate with self-motivated, efficient, and effective teams, resulting in happy clients and a more engaging and enjoyable work environment for everyone.

Imagine yourself sitting in a classroom with around 50 of your peers as professionals and recent college graduates, all studying for one of the hardest professional exams on the planet (the CPA Exam). If that doesn't sound stressful enough, make that for 8 hours on a Saturday, or you could do 4 hours Tuesday and Thursday night. Then, to top it off, you are learning nonprofit and governmental accounting. I know - SNOOZE-VILLE.Well, before you grab a gallon of coffee, there is hope. Your teacher (me) is fun, engaging, easy to understand, and crazy as it may seem, even having you think you are enjoying this. In all seriousness, I knew as a professional development expert that in each class, I did an incredible job of teaching these adults. While I appreciated my high evaluations, my favorite sign of success was that people stayed awake, asked questions, want to talk to me after class, and ask if I would teach them again. That was teaching success.
  • Excel Youth Zone
Education Program Director - Service Learning Statewide Coordinator
Excel Youth Zone Jul 2009 - Feb 2011
One of the most challenging people to teach are teachers. Through a seven-year contract with California Department of Education "CDE" (that started with Volunteer San Diego), I trained and provided professional development to teachers and fellow teacher trainers to develop K-12 teachers into effective facilitators of learning. As a facilitator of learning, these teachers inspired students to want to be in school and strive to be their best. Grades would rise, classroom engagement became the new normal, and kids who had to be there forgot that fact and felt like they got to be in school. One of my favorite moments was pulling off a remarkable feat in motivating people. As part of my role leading teacher trainings state-wide for CDE, I led and organized the 2011 Service-Learning Leadership Institute (a three-day conference for teachers, trainers, administrators, and students). The only catch was I had a budget for just 1/4 of my time than in the past allowed for 1 full-time employee and 7 part-time employees to implement such a large event. To pull this off, I engaged a team of 20 volunteers, and together we had the best evaluations of the event in its history and, of course, had the best profitability.
  • Volunteer San Diego
Program Director - Youth Empowement & Countywide Service-Learning Coordinator
Volunteer San Diego Oct 2003 - Jul 2009
    San Diego, Ca, Us
I love volunteering, and I love being a catalyst for others to volunteer. I am such a volunteer-enthusiast that I personalized my license plate on my car as "VLNTEAR" (yes, I know it is spelled wrong, but I get choked up when I make a difference). At Volunteer San Diego, I had wonderful experiences successfully:1) leading teams of 1000s of volunteers and AmeriCorps members to run my programs, large-scale county-wide events, and even teach 20 teachers how to improve their craft (often better than other people can get paid staff to do) and2) providing professional development and training hundreds of teachers, school districts, and after-school providers to get their students to be engaged in the classroom and improve their grades by having their students volunteer in the communityAs a master of getting people who are not paid (i.e., volunteers and students) to kick butt and provide high-quality work, I decided this unique talent needed to be shared. Luckily, the California Department of Education agreed. They contracted with me to train teachers and other trainers on the different elements to engage students in their schoolwork and their community. Not an easy task - because teachers are not often looking to try something new, and students are not often looking to enjoy school. Good thing our training worked, even in the toughest of schools. The results - excellent grades and, even more importantly, we created life-long learners (both the students and the teachers) who wanted to be where they had to be each day.

    Grossmont College Jan 2003 - May 2006
    El Cajon, Ca, Us
Teaching accounting and "how to get a job" courses may sound boring to some, but not me. My favorite part was connecting with the students through their learning process and spending the time after class providing additional professional development and career advice. I loved to watch them blossom from being overwhelmed by new information to feeling competent and confident. It makes a mentor/teacher's heart like mine fulfilled.

Moss Adams Llp Sep 1999 - Sep 2003
    Seattle, Wa, Us
I loved that I continued to grow my business acumen and as an effective leader at Moss Adams. The three things I loved most about my work as an audit manager was:1) leading my team to serve our clients that exceed their expectations2) really understanding our clients’ business systems and ways they could improve and3) providing professional development, coaching, and support to my team so they could be even better at what they didWhile I performed financial and federal compliance audits to non-profits and other companies, I consulted them on ways to improve the efficiency and accuracy of business practices. I have a knack for seeing ways that people and processes could work better together for my team and my clients.

I feel so lucky that working for PwC was my first job right out of college. This experience was like getting a real-world MBA 3 times over. As an auditor, I went into various companies and organizations and led teams of CPAs to:➢ analyze the financials➢ assess the internal systems and controls➢ evaluate regulation compliance➢ make recommendations to improve business processes, procedures, and risk managementConfession time – Since I was just out of college, I was bright-eyed and frankly a bit cocky, thinking I knew it all. With a bit of professional development, it didn't take long to realize that I needed not just to know the technical parts of my job, but to be successful, I needed to figure out how to be great with people. I mastered:◆ honoring and respecting my clients, my co-workers, and my bosses,◆ being willing to be wrong so I could learn and grow, and ◆ being responsible and accountable. In short, I blossomed into a professional that people asked to work with on their projects.I am grateful that I learned how to be a professional while performing financial audits and compliance reviews for non-profits and universities including Stanford University, Golden Gate University, Marin Community Foundation, and more.
